Moving to get good, but not "best" public schools (currently in private) - where to go?

I want to thank the person who posted the link to the Science Fair winners - it is very telling as regards to those HS which apparently have a stronger math/science focus.

You're welcome . That was just the list of second place finishers. Lists of all winners for a number of years are available here. It gives you an even better sense of the strength of the programs.

Yes, thank you. I actually looked at all of 2009 and perused some of the earlier years. Pretty interesting - both the schools listed and many of the projects!

Ummm. If you are looking for smaller class sizes as you mentioned, FFX is not the way to go. They will have a minimum of 25 ea. Many have more.

They will have a minimum of 25 ea

You really don't know what. At our school the classes at max have been 25 below grade 4. Some schools definitely have more than that. But not all.

My DC's class in FCPS last year was 24. Kindergarten is significantly lower than that (maybe 18).

PP here. My DC was in second last year. Also, the smiley should be 18.

My DC's class in FCPS last year (3rd grade) had 18 students.

I wonder where people with large classes go to school. I think some of the "best" schools are overcrowded.

ITA with this post. We've lived here for ten years and DH has had the same commute for those ten years and it's been "60 - 70 minutes long" maybe seven times during that decade.

Why do people insist on making up these stories? The 60 -70 minute commute in non-summer hours is standard. Pretending it is not is so silly! Have done it for years. Lived in the area my whole adult life.

I am the PP who said that. I don't understand why you think I am making it up? DH has done it every day for 9 years. Yes, sometimes it takes longer (accident, heavy rain), but typically not. Individual location and number of lights getting to 50 makes a difference.

ITA with this post. It also matters where you are going in DC. My spouse goes to the House side of Capitol Hill and it is generally a 45 minute commute.

LOL. It's like Lake Wobegone. All the children are above average, and no one has a commute more than 45 minutes.

and no one has a commute more than 45 minutes

10:18 here. I wish. If I leave at 7:50/8, then my commute is 75-90 minutes. Which is why I leave at 5:45. But the upside is I am usually home by 4.

The "not so best" schools are likely Title I schools, and the Title I schools are mandated to have smaller class sizes.

I'm 19:41. Our school is not a Title 1 school.

But the largest class sizes I know about are in wealthy schools: Spring Hill, Colvin Run, etc.
