Metropolitan DC Local Politics
Let me correct you there. It is cyclist and bike, not cyclists and bikes. No one uses these things. |
Generally DDOT considers all sorts of configurations - there probably was a reason why they didn’t chose that solution. You can probably find the design options online. As for making the turns “very difficult” for large vehicles … that’s a feature, not a bug! Large vehicles should be taking turns slowly and cautiously. |
| Neighborhood resident here. Proud to report that I witnessed my first user of the new bike lanes yesterday—an electric scooter, which I’m not sure is supposed to be using those lanes. I never see bikes on that road, and I drive it all of the time. The good news is the original proposal to eliminate 180 parking spots throughout the neighborhood was scrapped for this more “modest” plan. |
Yes, it's ok for people on electric scooters to use bike lanes. As for never seeing people on bikes on that road, well, that's partly a you thing (some people are inexplicably unable to see people who are on bikes), and partly the whole purpose of the bike lanes. People generally try to avoid biking on roads where it's dangerous to bike. People are far more likely to bike on roads where it's safe to bike. |
We could have put $10,000 in a college savings accounts for 400 poor children. Instead we spend $4 million on a place for people to lock up their bikes that no one uses. Sweet. |
The problem here lies with the city, not with any cyclists. Read a bit more about the facility. It was used successfully for ~5-10 years, leased by a private vendor. The vendor went out of business during the pandemic, and the city both wouldn't let anyone else use it, and turned it into a dump. |
| Loving the bike proponent suggesting above that somehow drivers who note never seeing blinds are the road are somehow not seeing bikes. I’d move to get a tally of how many bikes navigate that hill every day. Doubt there are many. I think the initial survey proposing the dramatic cut to parking in GP on 37th street reported maybe a dozen cyclists. This is a build it and hope they will come wish. Let’s see how it works. |
Yeah, no way anyone uses a bike over there. It's not like its right next to a major University and some smaller schools and in between that and some retail and Georgetown.. Oh wait. |
| Let’s agree to disagree. You think tons of bikers will use the lanes. I think not. Let’s see what happens. |
DP. Yes, let's. Let's build the bike lanes. In fact, let's build out a complete, convenient, connected, safe bike network, in all of DC, and see what happens. |
Is this going to be privately funded and not harm any existing transportation infrastructure? If so, then by all means do it. If not, then that's an awfully large financial gamble with, based on current usage , a very low probability of success. |
| Your comment is precisely why so many people hate the bike proponents. Isn’t there a middle ground? Could you possibly be wrong? I’m hopeful this drivers and bikers can coexist in DC. |
| I just drove near Rockville town center today with new bike lanes. What does a thick green line that end half way through the street mean?? I thought a crosswalk for bikes but why would it end in the middle of the street. |
The city’s biking policies in a nutshell |
Yes people walk or use their cars. There is no need for bike lanes because there is so little demand. |
