Berkeley and Stanford to ACC, does this hurt UVA and Duke?

I don't get why they waste their time playing FCS football given their other programs are in the Big East. Just like the Ivy League, if you are going to commit to playing at a D1 level, why not actually do well?
Otherwise, keep your recruited athlete standards more like MIT, Hopkins, and Swarthmore and play D3.

Football can cost as much as all other sports combined. If you don't see a path to revenue, it isn't worth it.

I believe there’s also a program exclusive to Stanford and Duke athletes for internships and engagement programs during the summer, so this will likely strengthen that.

No, the Ivy League is easily at the top in academics. It isnot at the top in athletics, but does not offer athletic scholarships.

The Ivy League is irrelevant to discussions of real sports leagues in 2023. You might as well compare it to the NESCAC, Centennial, and UAA (D3 leagues).

The PP claimed the ACC would be the top in academics. It isn't . They didn't say tops in some vaguely defined combination of athletics and academics.

Excellent point. Some sports writers are calling for the US Congress to intervene and mandate regionalization of college athletic conferences (something we had in the past). Instead, we are experiencing the professionalization of college sports.

This has been going on for quite a while.

This depends on the sport we are talking about. Other than football and perhaps M basketball, top performing ivies could go toe-to-toe with the likes of any of the teams in the ACC. Princeton MBB made it to the Sweet 16 and Columbia's WBB beat a few ACC teams last year. When you talk about other sports like LAX, fencing, crew, etc. then the ivy teams would be the favorites on any field.

Ya think? 8 of the world's 10 largest sports stadiums are U.S. college football stadiums.

This would never happen. Real open question if Congress has the power to do this. They do maybe but I would not bank on it. Second this type of goverment control would never get throught he Republicans and at least half of democrats could just care less either way.

Feds might claim coast-to-coast travel in Big 10 & ACC contributes to climate change. Once that happens, we get scenes like those folks blocking the road recently out west. But they will be blocking the runway as the Rutgers football team attempts to fly to a game against UCLA.
Anonymous
…and Transportation Secretary Mayor Pete will claim there is nothing he can do to clear the runway.

Duke becomes third best school academically in the ACC.

OP here, nope. I am definitely not a fan of Stanford or Duke. Although very good schools, I find the students who go to these particular schools as smug and cocky types who tend to be douche bags—from when I was in college and to the ones who attended my DC school. I am a fan of UVA but have no association. My DC was going to apply in the last cycle but got into her school early.

Maybe. Regardless, it is unlikely that those who apply to Duke also apply to UC-Berkeley.

The discussion above focused on the academic stature of these schools is beside the point. It's all about the Football media market. The ACC has added the Bay Area and Dallas media markets, which should boost their TV contracts. I think that's the point. Increased revenue from football will help preserve all the olympic (non-rev) sports. It comes at a cost for the athletes that have to travel. Note however, that not all sports compete against every conference opponents as it is. Look at PITT's soccer schedule; they play about half their games out of conference as it is. There will be more travel (particularly for the teams out West) but every ACC team is not flying to CA to play CAL and Stanford in every sport.

Without the academic stature of Stanford & Cal, these schools would never have been offered admission to the ACC.

Not a bad group of schools

NC State, FSU, Clemson...come on now, those are not even average academic schools.
