I didn’t go on it for specific symptoms, but am 46 (almost 47) and am still using the same hormonal contraception I’ve been on since my early 30s. I use the EluRyng, a combo ethinyl estradiol and etonogestrel) vaginal ring. I have very light periods during the week between an old and a new one. I’ve had some symptoms that seem peri related, such as weight gain in my belly (not much, but I never gained weight there before age 45) and irritability/depression. I have a history of depression, though, and started Wellbutrin to help with that.
I’ve been told I can stay on it until I’m 50 and plan to. My mom didn’t hit menopause until her late 50s, so we’ll see how this goes. |

Yes. At 53 I was put on progesterone only BC pills due to heavy bleeding. They are very low dose and don't have the blood clot risk combined pills w/estrogen have.
My blood pressure is very low for my age. My sister didn't complete menopause until 57. I have been on them 3 months and it's made my sleep so much better and I don't get hot at night anymore. I also barely bleed--GYN told me the pills (which are taken daily--no week off) can prevent any period in some people--much like Mirena which was also mentioned as in option. I prefer the start-stop myself option of BCs and didn't want the insertion--pull out bother with Mirena when I could be done with menopause in a year or so. I was put on it for a year and next summer we will re-visit and see where I am. |
False. Many women have very low progesterone during peri. This causes irregular and very heavy (flooding/soaking through) periods. Going on BC with progesterone restores the level of the hormone in your body. |
What are you “false”ing? Both BC and HRT will give you progesterone. BC has you stop any you’re making and replaces it. HRT adds to the levels you have. |
