Walking is underrated for weight maintenance and weight loss! My experience....

Walking also isn’t as hard on the joints as tunning and doesn’t make you look as haggard.

Voluminous studies have also clearly established that the most effective long term treatment of chronic pain is gentle movement- especially walking.

Maybe using our bodies as millions of years of biology intended is actually good for us? So far the research shows that walking benefits us significantly in terms of sleep, mood, pain, cholesterol levels (especially boosting hdl and lowering triglycerides), blood sugar regulation and building/maintaining bone density.

But sure naysayers, go ahead and decry the value of walking.

No, walking cannot outpace a poor diet. No exercise no matter how intense will make up for binge eating, or eating a diet high in ultra processed foods which research shows compels most people to eat ~500 calories more daily than they do on a clean diet of minimally processed foods. 90% of weight loss is what you put down your gullet, period.

But yes an overweight or obese person who walks daily will be healthier than a slender person who is sedentary. All the research is showing us this. It’s not rocket science - health is about much more than the numbers on the scale or on your clothes tags.

Walking is CRAZY good for you. Increases your NEAT and makes maintaining weight so much easier, not to mention cardiovascular health. It’s so underrated.

I love walking . I try to get 15000 steps daily although that largely depends on my day and the weather. I agree it’s amazing exercise. However, I don’t think it’s enough. As we get older we need weight bearing exercises and strength training is essential

Curious how you're getting in that many steps on a daily basis? Genuinely, no snark here. Do you live in the city and walk everywhere, or do you go on productive walks every day? On those days when I don't "go for outdoor walks" I'm lucky to clear 5000 steps.

I walk a definite 10000 steps. I’ve been doing this for years and track it on my watch. But often I do more. I go for long dog walks in the mornings. And I take my dog out again before bed. I’m also the type of person to park my car far away when I’m shopping , etc…I walk when I take my kids to their evening sports practices. I listen to podcasts, make calls, etc

It’s not good for weight loss, but it’s great to maintain weight!

I agree. I recently started adding some daily walks to my existing work out routine and I definitely think its been helping with my weight loss. Its also great for mental health.

I don't think it's underrated. The value is known. My doctors have talked about it for years. the key is brisk walking. Most people never get up to the brisk pace but instead are doing a leisurely stroll. It will help keep you healthy but if a person wants to build beyond basic muscle tone, or improve strength, then walking alone isn't going to do it and that's why people go to gyms.

What is a brisk pace? I average 3.6 - 4.0, depending on the day/conditions/how I'm feeling. This am, I walked 2.5 miles and my tracker said 15:35 for the first 2 miles. Is that brisk? I'm 49.
