When my son makes it to the World Cup, and it's only he that stands between his team making it to the next round, I'll be cheering as he makes the smart decision to deliberately hit the ball and keep if from going in the goal so that his team has at least a chance to go forward. Yeah! That's my boy! Or, Yeah! That's my girl!

Oh yeah, than you should condone what Thierry Henry did also. And condone what Zidane did. And Maradona. And that German goalie.

Yes you are condoning cheating. Great parenting indeed.

um...that german goalie didn't cheat. The ref didn't give the goal. How is that the germans fault? I'm so sick of everyone beating down on the germans. Of course they won't beg the ref to give england that goal, just like england didn't beg the ref 44 years ago to not give them a goal that wasn't one. And england ended up winning the world cup because of this.
In this case, there is no way england had any chance to win. Germany was the better team, and won fair and square. The not given goal, bad call from the ref and not at all germanys fault. They didn't cheat!!!!!

This is why whiney moms don't have any power outside the drop-off line. No one can take listening to your drivel.

Rationalizing cheating. Well done.

Germany's goalie admitted that he deliberately grabbed the ball out of the goal and threw it the other way to fool the ref into thinking it wasn't a goal. He knew it was a goal and deliberately deceived the ref. Is that really more sportsmanlike than Suarez? Germany likely would have won anyway, but the fact remains, the goalie was very unsportsmanlike in that way.

Did any of these PKs involve a striker who mistook himself for a goalie in the final minute of an overtime game? This play by Suarez betrays the spirit of soccer, which is known as football around the world because the essence of the game is that players use their feet and the rest of their body, chest to trap, head to pass, deflect and even score, because that's so damn challenging. Even the Italian word for soccer, calcio, is foot-oriented. It means "kick." I cannot imagine a more disappointing way for a team to lose or a more questionable way for a team to win.

I agree, cheating sucks, especially when you lose due to the other team cheating. But, they got caught cheating, they got what they get for cheating and Ghana failed to take what was theirs. The ref can't give them a goal and make them winner because they deserve to and the other team cheated. They had their chance to make things right, but didn't. What else is there to say?

The Ref did everything right. It wasn't him, it was Ghana who failed to follow through. In the end it doesn't matter why you get a PK, you gotta make them if you wanna win. Noone is gonna be a world champion because the world thinks you deserve it or because you got cheated on. You have to make the goals. You can't win without it...just ask Argentina...lol

I agree Ghana failed their PKs. And I am glad that you agree that Suarez cheated and Uruguay did not deserve to win. This is my whole point. Thank you for agreeing.

Check this out... it looks like the foul wasn't really a foul either.

Germany is an amazing team, their offensive strategies blow me away, but it's not fair for a goalie to keep a ball in play to deceive the ref(s). It's what he did. Thank goodness the Germans won by several goals, or this might have been another maddening controversy.

That whole situation shouldn't have happened in the first place. There were two ghanian players in offside an the lineman didn't catch it.

That's so unfair! Why didn't the Ghanaian players alert the ref to being offside? Cheaters. I just hope I raise a child who will alert the ref when he is offside.

Silly, silly 12:58. We all know it's not always possible for a player to know if he's offside especially in a near mosh pit situation like the final moments of the U-G game. It's clear that Suarez knew what he was doing. I've actually seen some very articulate comments online about how his move really goes against the spirit of the game. I hope we don't start seeing more of these.

Question: In MLS, would a red card carry over into the next season? (It does in youth soccer.)

12:58 you should raise a child that will just never be in offside, he should prevent it at all costs!

I'm pretty sure you mean he just shouldn't play soccer. Too bad. He's on his fifth year of travel.

Different poster here, but I didn't have a problem with the Uruguay "handball" either. It is not a matter of rooting for Uruguay (I was rooting for Ghana), but a recognition of the rules and penalties of the game, and what makes sense.

Now Uruguay out and I don't care about that either.

16:38 What if such handballs become commonplace? Wouldn't that detract from the sport?
