Wow! Just wow! What a match.
What Suarez did was disgraceful and totally sportsman-like. If one team won fairly so be it, I'd say congrats. The ball Suarez intentionally stopped with his hand was heading straight for the back of the goal in Ghana's favor. In such circumstances the wronged team should be awarded a goal instead of a penalty (as in basketball) and the offending player should be suspended for several games. I am heartbroken for Gyan, soooo close. I am impressed that he got right back up and took the first penalty kick, successfully. Ghana palyed a better game. overall. I'm not connected to either team or country so I will say objectively that Uruguay won this game because Suarez cheated. |
| O.P. so true and well said!!!!!!So sad for Ghana they got to play with cheats!!!!! |
|
OP here: Thanks pp.
Of course that was a typo. I meant to say "What Suarez did was disgraceful and totally UNsportsman-like." The Cheater! |
| Totally disagree. The rules allow for a handball with a penalty: the PK. If you don't like the brilliant move by Suarez, you need to change the rules of the game. He increased his team's odds of winning from 0% (sure goal) to 10-15% (change the PK would not score). That's just a smart player. |
Yup. Most yellow and red cards are given for strategic moves. Same with fouls, etc. It's part of the game. Handballs in goal aren't that uncommon - and it's an automoatic red card. |

The rules do NOT allow for a handball with a penalty. Go to page 37 of this FIFA document and you will learn that what happened is considered an offense, obstructing a goal with your hands is one of the seven red-card-worthy OFFENSES in soccer. Handballs in goal are not very common, either. There is so much ignorance around this discussion, here and all over the Internet. If soccer is going to devolve and folks are going to celebrate strategic offenses, fine, but at least get the facts straight.

This is a rule that FIFA definitely needs to review.
I was heartbroken too for Ghana. They fought valiantly. That handball in the box will be as infamous as Maradona's hand of God, what is handball a staple with South American playing ?, or Thierry Henry's against the Irish.
Anyway Suarez the CHEATER (since when do we get to celebrate lack of sportsman ship as brilliant??? the world saw shich team was the better team yesterday and it was definitely not the Uruguayans) and Uruguay should not celebrate too early, the Dutch are next... |

The French paid for Henry's handball by imploding at the World Cup.
I think FIFA needs to review this rule, too. What about red carding the offending player AND the manager/coach AND suspending the offending player without pay for six months AND fining the team $500,000? |
AND Disqualifying them for the next world cup !!! |

Such girl responses. He did it (perhaps even instinctively) and got the penalty. He's not responsible for Ghana not making the PK and he's not responsible for them blowing the penalties later on.
"It's not fair!" How often do you guys watch soccer? (hmmm...let me take a guess...every 47 months) |
| We see the same thing in a lot of American sports. What about intentionally fouling at the end of basketball games? Players in football will routinely deliberately commit penalties on purpose if it provides an advantage (think holding on a QB about to get drilled or grabbing a receiver who is wide open). It sucks for Ghana but that's the way it goes sometimes. |

10:02 I watch soccer all the time. My son plays travel soccer and on his school team. We've gone to dozens of professional games. We watch on television, too. Lots of men and boys think this was a cheap, questionable move. What's next? Spitting at an opponent who's trying to score? Is that acceptable? As for Ghana not making the PK, there would not have been one if Suarez had used his head. Or tried to. This is soccer, not volleyball. By the way, this is a longstanding problem with soccer. The penalty kick was introduced in 1891 to penalize this very thing. The laws of soccer evolve.
10:31 Intentional fouling is one thing but using your hands i soccer to block a goal is quite another. |
I would argue that you might want to watch league soccer (not your son's travel team) to understand the game more. |
| Suarez was rightly penalized for what he did. He was sent off, rewarded Ghana a PK, and will be out for the semifinals. That is what the rules stipulate. What more do you want? I was rooting for Ghana and are pissed they lost in such a shitty way, but that's the way it goes sometimes. Perhaps the rule should be re-evaluated but you open up a Pandora's Box wherein the referee will need to speculate on every handball in the box as to whether it was destined to go in or not. |

11:23 What do you think I don't understand? I'm not the only person who finds this handball block questionable.
11:36 I could see a tougher rule. Is a red card enough in this context? Give the manager a red card, too. Fine the team. Make the rule so harsh it will almost never happen again. |
