Happens all the time with subs. Students are actually shocked and complain if a sub holds them accountable.

Subs, in my experience, do absolutely nothing. They are glorified babysitters. Which is why I don't understand why people insist they should be paid a lot more.

Ok. To be fair, when I made that comment, I was thinking of high school subs, since that's what this topic was about.

You're right, I do think elementary school subs do a lot more work that looks more like what their regular teacher does. But in high school? Forget it. They're just there to take attendance and make sure kids don't kill themselves. They might or might not hand out the assignment you leave behind if you're lucky.

I was a sub for a few years before I got my certification, and when I took ES jobs, I knew I was going to *work.* I built up contacts who knew they could leave real plans and have them followed (reading groups, continue with ongoing project, etc). For MS and HS, I build up contacts who knew I could keep a class from setting itself on fire. They could leave a movie and trust that there would be no incidents. That's the goal. This was before smart phones, but yeah, I brought a book. I joked around with the kids. Sometimes did origami or fancy paper airplanes (for those that wanted to). Basically, my job was to keep them occupied and safe for that class period and then send them on their way. And the teachers knew that and I was never asked to do much more.

That said, I made the essentially the same pay 15+ years ago that I would make in the same job today, and that is not going to attract anybody that can be trusted to maintain a safe environment for teenagers, especially if those teenagers have any behavior or discipline issues.

I pay my babysitter $20 an hour. For one child. That child sleeps for most of the time.

It’s unreasonable to pay subs a non-living wage and expect them not only to teach but to have chairs thrown at them, catch whatever illnesses are going around school, receive no benefits (such as paid sick leave or health insurance), little respect, and be subject to public humiliation on Dcurbanmom. It raises questions as to why MCPS families, employees and unions aren’t demanding more for the few subs there are.
