Why does this forum attract so many people who hate pets?

It's usually the people that are the problem.

Where is your line in not saving animals? Why judge others who do?

I will say, though, that it’s not just the Pets forum. There are people being intentionally cruel all over DCUM.

I can’t count how many times I’ve been told I’m unlovable and pathetic because I have two dogs and no children.

I’m not overly sensitive about such comments (because I know they come from unhappiness), but I will avoid DCUM if I’m feeling especially vulnerable.

So here’s the thing. Lots of people don’t want dogs places they don’t belong and think it’s a loser move to act like having a dog is the same as kids. Plenty of people think pit bulls are dangerous. People just aren’t saying these things out loud. When I talk about doing stuff with family on the weekends and a colleague tells me their weekend was spent hanging out with their dog, I smoke politely but inside I think, wow, sad.

DP- PP, it's you who makes me sad. Why the need to judge? I have both kids, who I love to death, and dogs, and let me tell you, a weekend with just my dogs sounds like heaven. People's lives take different paths, and having kids isn't for everyone for many reasons. It could be that they don't feel prepared to be parents, which is laudable, it could be infertility, lack of a partner, or some other reason you don't know about. I have a childless friend who had three miscarriages and a very scary ectopic pregnancy, and yes, her family includes a beloved dog.
Why do you think that having kids makes you superior to the "sad" people who don't?

I am sorry but a dog is not one’s family. I have lots of friends that don’t have kids and have very full and interesting lives. I feel bad for those who use dogs as substitutes for children. It is very sad.

Well I feel sorry for you not knowing the unconditional love a dog can give you. So, dogs in many ways better than children. Children are wonderful of course but dogs are amazing.

I on the Pet forum quite a lot and 99% of posters have pets and love animals.

So perhaps you read Pet forum posts from Recent Topics when they trend *because* they're controversial, like Pitt threads. In which case, yes, you'll find posters who do not understand or care for animals.

Also, among animal lovers, we can disagree on many methods of training or different lifestyles.

I really disagree. I actually avoid this forum (usually) because it's so hateful and ignorant, so much of the time. I can't even count how many threads there have been over the years that I've accidentally seen, of people fantasizing about kicking dogs, shooting dogs, bashing dogs with hammers. People have - apparently sincerely - talked about killing their family dogs because some idiotic DNA test tells them there's a little pit bull in that beautiful pup they've loved, and just post after post after post encouraging them to do it. It's horrifying, the things that are regular conversation here.

I think that the pets forum is like this because normal people who love animals have basically been driven out, by a culture of violence and idiocy. Now it's just the hateful people talking to each other all the time, because who else would want to get involved.

It's sort of like how the politics forum has gotten, too, to be honest - a few MAGA heads have so overwhelmed the conversation that they are driving out the regular people who just want to talk about stuff.

I wish it were more people like you and me - who love animals, and want to talk about the normal parts of owning and living with animals. I'd love this forum if so.

Those comments you mention are not common. You're showing yourself. Typical nutjob who puts animals above humans.

I love pets but loathe bad pet owners, most specifically bad dog owners who do not train their dogs or spend enough time with them and then take them places where the dogs wreak havoc with people (especially kids) and other dogs.

I also love dogs but think they don't belong everywhere, and am pretty astonished at the entitlement of some people to believe their dog belongs in restaurants (where it violates the health code, regardless of the restaurant's personal opinion of this), on school grounds where they are explicitly not allowed, off leash in places where this poses a hazard for people, animals, and the dogs themselves, and so on.

Love animals, very mixed feelings about people, often post in this forum with comments that might come off as "anti dog" but are actually "anti idiot dog owners."

I think 99% of what OP considers "hating pets" is actually hating bad, inconsiderate owners.

You clearly do not have a child. I have had pets and have children and having children is a thousand times better and more fulfilling.

dp Why does it bug you that other people consider having dogs better than kids? Like how does that affect you personally?

Hating pit bulls is not the same as hating pets. False equivalency

You do realize that for a few dogs that do attack there are many loveable dogs that are pit bulls and pit bull mixes. I blame humans for the dog attacks honestly

+1
Pit bull owners just do not want to acknowledge the risks they give to everyone else in keeping their SwEeTeSt DoG eVeR. Whose warning signs they’re actively misinterpreting as intelligence and love. (Love those whale eyes, pit owners! That’s not a good sign.)

I'm a cat person. I don't hate dogs but I've never owned one and don't really want to, and I do get annoyed at the many inconsiderate dog owners out there who allow their dog to be a nuisance, or worse a danger, and generally treat their dog like it's a human. A bad dog owner is much more of a nuisance than a bad cat owner.
