I will say, though, that it’s not just the Pets forum. There are people being intentionally cruel all over DCUM.
I can’t count how many times I’ve been told I’m unlovable and pathetic because I have two dogs and no children.
I’m not overly sensitive about such comments (because I know they come from unhappiness), but I will avoid DCUM if I’m feeling especially vulnerable.

So here’s the thing. Lots of people don’t want dogs places they don’t belong and think it’s a loser move to act like having a dog is the same as kids. Plenty of people think pit bulls are dangerous. People just aren’t saying these things out loud.
When I talk about doing stuff with family on the weekends and a colleague tells me their weekend was spent hanging out with their dog, I smoke politely but inside I think, wow, sad.
I have children and I also have a dog. I love my children more than anything in the world but that doesn't take away the adoration I have for my dog -- and vice-versa. My dog makes me incredibly happy.
DP- PP, it's you who makes me sad. Why the need to judge? I have both kids, who I love to death, and dogs, and let me tell you, a weekend with just my dogs sounds like heaven. People's lives take different paths, and having kids isn't for everyone for many reasons. It could be that they don't feel prepared to be parents, which is laudable, it could be infertility, lack of a partner, or some other reason you don't know about. I have a childless friend who had three miscarriages and a very scary ectopic pregnancy, and yes, her family includes a beloved dog.
Why do you think that having kids makes you superior to the "sad" people who don't?
