Ana de Armas, the next big “sex symbol” of a generation?

Ah. You might be right. OP here, I was thinking movie stars, not models.

No she is not a sex symbol. She is a woman who other women admire, find attractive and think is the prefect woman. Sex symbol are archetype of the bombshell. They are first and foremost about sex appeal. Other women are threaten, envious, etc. If your DS brought home his new girlfriend Emily Ratajkowski you would be happy. If your DS brought home his new girlfriend Pamela Anderson not so much.

She is so pretty but I don’t think she has the raw sex appeal of a “sex symbol”. I also don’t think this is necessarily due to her age, just her overall screen presence

Sydney Sweeney is more in line with what I see as being a current sex symbol

Do you enjoy your misogyny? Holy moly.

DP lol what do you have a crush on her and therefore everyone must agree with you?

I have almost no feelings on her except I loved Knives Out. But saying she slept with someone to get her roles...that is misogyny. Sorry. That's not disagreeing.

It’s happens all the time. Do you think nepotism is misogyny?

Nepotism does not equal misogyny. Saying a woman can only get ahead if she put out because YOU don't think she' s talented enough...that's misogyny. Just ask all of Weinstein's victims.

I'm male and have seen most of her movies. She is attractive due to her large eyes and petite, cute.
Acting wise, she does well in roles where she is 'crazy', dramatic, or mysterious. Also does great in Action fighting scenes (or her stunt double). Does not do well in 'romantic comedy' type scenes. See the new Netflix movie as an example.

Meh, not for me personally. I don't see it

I think most men would think “yeah, she’s hot”…like most other famous actresses and musicians. That doesn’t her a sex symbol. Which is also fine, I doubt she’s even going for that.

I agree with you that nepotism and misogyny are different. But, let's call a spade a spade.

Weinstein's "victims" all thought they were getting ahead in Hollywood. Don't kid yourself. No one goes up to a producer's hotel room at midnight and not think anything sexual is going to happen.

Ana's fling with Ben Affleck is what put her on the map.

I think she’s cute but not actually pretty. She has a kind of weird childish look to me. Loved her in Knives Out but nothing since. Husband said she’s fine but not really his type. He thought Margo Robbie was “hot” in Wolf of Wall Street, we both did.

I have no idea what you’re talking about re: my son bringing home one vs the other. That doesn’t trigger any reaction in me (and I have 2 sons).

I think it’s still Scarlett johannson and Idris Elba.

Hahah what? First of all, I don’t admire Emily Ratajkowski (I’m a woman). But do I think she has sex appeal? Absolutely.

I wouldn’t be threatened by any woman my son brought home. What a weird way to frame this.

And men definitely think Emily is hot. Not just attractive. Hot.

She IS stunning.

I think many men will find her Spanish accent intoxicating too. 💄

The typical DCUM harpies are just jealous that no men look at them the way they look at Ana!

Second reply to this thread and I think hits it on the nose. She's very beautiful and she seems like a sweet person but there is something about her on-screen personality that doesn't work, I'm not sure what it is.

I think Gal Gadot has a similar vibe but somehow it works together a bit more effectively. Maybe she's more sultry whereas Ana de Areas has this sweetness/vulnerability that doesn't seem to work with the sexiness?

I actually do admire Emily Ratajkowski, as a woman. I have read some of her writing, including an essay she wrote on having some of the photos she had taken very early in her modeling career get used in weird and upsetting ways as her star rose. She is very thoughtful about art and feminism and has a unique perspective on both as someone whose image has been used to make art, often in ways that are exploitative and anti-feminist. She's kind of a fascinating person to me.

But I also disagree with PP's definition of sex symbol. I think a sex symbol is anyone, man or woman, whose appearance gets used in media to represent a lustful ideal. Emily Ratajkowski has absolutely filled that role, as has Pam Anderson. I guess Ana de Armas is currently filling that role as well.
