Information from the NTSB report about the tragic incident where a woman from this area was killed while on a private jet a few weeks ago:
https://onemileatatime.com/news/private-jet-fatality-trim-issue-not-turbulence/ I point it out because like the Kobe Bryant helicopter crash and Aaliyah plane crash, there can be an incentive for pilots to take unsafe actions in the interests of getting their client to the destination. |
| Nope, not worth the risk! |
+1000 I saw a friend post on social media photos of sending her kids off on a private plane with the grandparents for a fun weekend away. And I thought heck no, I would not send all of my living offspring together up in one of those death traps. It ended up being ok so maybe I’m overly anxious. But there is just no way. |
Wow this sounds like a local DC family. They were flying from Keene, VT to Leesburg, VA. |
|
It was a local woman from Cabin John who passed away. She was part of both the Clinton and Obama administrations.

Yup, terrible story. And definitely sounds like pilot error. https://www.washingtonpost.com/transportation/2023/03/24/dana-hyde-airplane-turbulence/ |
They are FAR less stringent about requirements to fly a private plane than to fly a commercial plane... They also don't have the same regulations for takeoff and landing procedures, equipment and safety checks, etc. Not to mention that private plane pilots have more incentives to cut corners. And they typically fly into smaller, more dangerous, airports. |
Lol this is it. Op doesn’t realize that these people are rich |
Ewww |
| We do this when we have elderly relatives with us or are flying to a destination that would require a transfer to a propeller plane. Most of the numbers I’ve seen on here are low. It’s hard to compare to commercial prices bc for us & most of our friends, we have so many points and status from flying a lot for work that we never pay for business or first, always coach and upgrade. That said, I can’t really think of any instances where it would be cheaper to fly private. I also find it disgusting and tacky when people post on social media. We used to own a plane and our only rule when we brought friends was no social media showing it. Our only friends who ever knew we had one were friends we brought with us. |
| I can see how you can justify it if you don’t live close to a major airport and/or have to do layovers. Do the door to door math on how long it takes to actually get to and from the airport. And layovers there and back with kids suck. If you’re splitting the jet along a few families, it’s probably not too bad. |
| It doesn’t save anything. It’s a flex. And they wouldn’t waste the money if they couldn’t find a way to brag about it, however subtle. |
| We did this with another family to get to a once in a lifetime trip. Was about $10k per family, comparable to business class on American. Was through one of the major charter services. Plane was great - not beyonce style but very very nice. And to guarantee we'd be there on time, with no security, private customs...was the right choice for us that one time. |
| Typically around 3X the cost of first class in my experience. Could be less if you are looking at a smaller plane but would say at least 2-2.5X the cost of first class. |
| You go if you’re invited by a fat cat who can business expense it. |
