Ah well. I don't think they would have given DC merit money and it's a pricier OOS than we were considering, but it still stings a little as it felt like the Goldilocks school and DC loved it.

I’m so sorry. It’s hard. Hoping your DC blooms where they are planted 😊😊😊

Good luck!

What's the reason for doing this? It can't be lack of dorm space in the fall because why would space open up in the spring? Do kids drop out after 1 semester? And UVA Wise too.

Partly dorm space because students go to study abroad or drop out. Partly because if a student starts in Spring the college doesn't have to report their GPAs/test scores in their official numbers so they won't bring down their profile.

Huh, interesting. I’m seeing reports of more and more schools presenting this as an option to some kids, even smaller schools. I find it off putting. Going abroad first semester probably isn’t the best way to start college for most kids

I think it's a great option personally--puts college in a wider perspective. For a kid whose qualified to go to W&M I think it won't disrupt their academic trajectory.

I agree, also lots of guaranteed sophomore transfer pathways.

I really like that W&M does the 1 semester. 1 year seems too long. For W&M, it's a housing issue--they guarantee housing for the first 2 years, but it's always tight.

First semester abroad will go by fast and may be a good experience for any. I think the biggest question is how the school integrates them into campus for Spring. I suspect they can add them in Spring because they have capacity from upperclass students studying abroad or doing a Washington semester, etc. So many of the housing spaces may be outside of freshman dorms.

Crazy to be rejected with an excellent profile like this. These places are nuts.

This year at least there was a hall in one dorm dedicated to transfer students and spring admits. So some upperclassmen, but mostly spring admit freshmen. DD started in the fall but has become close with a girl who started in spring and that girl has a freshman roommate and has had a great experience. Also, while I don't know the kids personally, two colleagues had kids who went the spring admit route and spent the fall in London. Honestly sounded like they had a lot more fun than DD did in the fall!

And my DC is involved with a Modern Language House that had a spring opening due to overseas travel. None of the language majors or minors wanted to swap mid year. They ended up with a freshman spring admit who did not speak the language in that space with a junior roommate. To some extent, freshman roomates are always luck of the draw. And it’s one of the nicest, newest dorms. But it’s a bad draw in terms of fitting in, as you suite mates are all speaking a foreign language around the dorm.
