What's the reason for doing this? It can't be lack of dorm space in the fall because why would space open up in the spring? Do kids drop out after 1 semester? And UVA Wise too. [/quote]

Partly dorm space because students go to study abroad or drop out. Partly because if a student starts in Spring the college doesn't have to report their GPAs/test scores in their official numbers so they won't bring down their profile.[/quote]

Huh, interesting. I’m seeing reports of more and more schools presenting this as an option to some kids, even smaller schools. I find it off putting. Going abroad first semester probably isn’t the best way to start college for most kids[/quote]

I really like that W&M does the 1 semester. 1 year seems too long.  For W&M, it's a housing issue--they guarantee housing for the first 2 years, but it's always tight.[/quote]
