How are we going to help these girls

And the Kardashians, that's a start.

I heard online time is worse for girls than boys these days. The boys are playing video games with each other which is less damaging than social media and worrying about likes etc.

Social media is horrible. I hate it.

I've spoken to my DD about it at length. I told her that if I see her getting too involved with social media, I'll take her phone away.

She knows that a lot of the IG stuff she sees is fake, like airbrushed ads. She knows to not bully people on social media, and if she does, phone goes away.

Get your DDs involved in activities. They need to boost their self esteem and confidence. My DD didn't have that until 13/14, and she's much happier and confident.

This!! Be willing to budget time and money on activities. Even if it means driving a lot and waiting around a lot. It's all better than having bored kids sitting around the house.

No, look at the study. Most of the problems are socially related - from other girls.

The statistics of violence and assault say something different. I'm not saying girls cannot be problems, as well. But, a girl didn't hold me down by the wrist on a date telling me I "wanted it." And the stats bear that out.

Read the study. Only one part is about assault - most of the statistics are about other issues.

I'm clearly not referring to the other issues.

Not able to read article due to paywall. Here is one issue I see though and I am sure I will get slammed. As a mom of a boy and a girl, I am not a fan of the girl sexy come hither thing online. Basically there is a subset of teen girls who lip sync to songs as they move around in a sexy way in their bra or some major cleavage showing shirt. Sometimes they even dance with their friends and act out sex acts. I don't think they totally understand that the message is "sex!" If you act like you are in a commercial for some phone sex or escort company, it will be surprising to some of the more obnoxious teen boys that you actually don't want sex. Nobody deserves to be forced into sex. Women can dress how they please. However...hear me out... if you are on tiktok acting out giving blow jobs, hand jobs and gyrating in you lingerie style dress there will be teen boys who think you are having sex and want to have a lot of it with just about anyone.

I have two girls, 10 and 13. I will have to say bullying by other GIRLS is the greatest threat to their mental health. My girls are kind, smart, and yes pretty and friendly. But the girls at this age are cruel. I also blame social media, definitely, though a lot of bullying happens in person.

This. Have a girl and boy. The worst is girl to girl and boy to boy.

Americans are always in competition. It's always "I'm better than you because of X, Y & Z". So much judgement on things that have literally no effect on your life. It's a much larger issue than just bullying or one gender over the other. Boys "can't" be emotional or feminine and girls "can't" be strong willed.

Obviously teen girls are too sexy so they must become men. Female sexuality is just that terrifying.

Or, you know, you could try raising girls with healthy body images and a positive sense of their own selves... But you don't have that, so why should your daughters?

This study was done right in the middle of the pandemic. Of course they felt worse than previously.

And, yet here you are...

Who is "you" that your referring to? When you have boys calling them "hos" at school, judging them, on top of media and social media . . . . but sure, it's just the parents.

Your first 2 sentences are just nonsensical.

Tell that to all the women who have been assaulted. Just look at that poor girl at the gym that is making the rounds. Can't even work out with a man in the room w/o fear of being attacked.

High schools here should try to get that young woman to come speak. She’s very articulate and an impressive role model. Most
girls have no clue how to fight a rapist.

It's more a smartphone and social media issue, not the internet as a whole.

NP here. I have been saying for years that I wish schools would ban cell phones.

It’s not the school’s fault. It’s the parents who give cell phones to their young kids.

Agree 100%

Social media is toxic.

For teen’s developing brains, social media is beyond toxic.

Social media is not sexually assaulting these girls. That was the most distressing part of the study for me. What is causing that increase? I wish they had asked more questions about that.

No, the BOYS are on social media and porn & getting messages about how to treat girls.

How about instead of blaming be a parent and help your own kid.
