Yeah that comment was crazy pants. |
I’m still confused what the basis of the doctor’s note was. You said you weren’t going to lie, so did you just say your daughter doesn’t want to swim at PE and would they write a note excusing her? Do doctors really do this if there’s no medical basis for something? |
OP here. Pretty much. I said she was extremely uncomfortable being in a swimsuit in front of classmates. I said I personally felt it was appropriate at her age to choose this level of modesty, and, if they agreed, Id appreciate a nonspecific excuse note. The doctor agreed. |

Lol, I remember this in 9th or 10th grade. There were like 50 girls in my gym class and like three or four girls who actually got in the pool. I got a note from my eye doctor. Didnt have to give him a reason. Just "Could you please write Lauren a note excusing her from swim in her gym class?" and he didn't even blink. Probably wrote hundreds of them. |
Gym is divided by gender in public school once you get to middle school. |
No don't do this. |
Get her women’s swim shorts and a rash guard if she is uncomfortable in a bathing suit.
I had to swim in PE in the late 80s. I was overweight and had the big 80s Aquanet hair. Swimming in school was pure hell for teen girls back then. But we did it because no parent would get us a doctors note. I went in with a big tee over my suit and had my hair in a scrunchie. I didn’t get it wet for any reason. Swimming in PE wasn’t real swimming with hour head going under. I doubt it is now either. |
I was very heavy in middle school. I would have rolled my eyes that your perfect bodied girl felt uncomfortable in her well fitted modest suit. Again...what is the lesson here? She SHOULD be ashamed of her body? |
Exactly. My guess is 99% of the girls have body insecurities. This is a situation of just dealing with it. |
Yes, which 14 year old ISNT insecure about something? Your kid isn't special. |
Good for you, OP, for listening to your daughter. I say YAY to you! There's no reason for her to have to go through swim class just because those of us in the older generation had to tolerate it. |
This must not be in Virginia. Swimming classes are definitely not on any sort of diploma for public education in Virginia. |
Honestly, spending time in a bathing suit in front of your peers is one of the best ways to deal w/ body image issues. I think every single school on the planet should make swimming required in middle school. |
So then what’s the lesson? You get to opt out of anything you don’t feel like doing? |
