$1.65M in Oxford, Mississippi—overpriced?

Middle TN- I would happily stake our private schools against DC privates any day of the week.

It's to distract them from the fact that their educational system is ranked 45th in the country.

That’s a feature, not a bug. The conservative segregationist elites don’t want to fund or have their kids rub shoulders with the Lesser Folks.

.....or not.

Most segregated schools are in New York, Illinois, California, Michigan, and New Jersey. The LIBERAL segregationist elites don't want to have their kids rub shoulders with the Lesser Folks. Do as I say, not as I do - that's the motto.

West Virginia is the most integrated.

I guess, to quote a previous poster, "Part of the appeal of the [North] is that you get to make up your own facts."

Um. This article is from 2014. Try this one from last year: https://www.npr.org/2022/07/14/1111060299/school-segregation-report

Still not great, but at least current. It also paints a more nuanced picture than what you’re trying to argue. I mean, do you really think elite southern conservatives send their kids to public school? Please.

Mississippi legislature just stripped black residents of Jackson their right to vote for judges and prosecutors.

Don’t piss on our shoes and call it rain. The state’s elites are still horrifically racist and crooks.

This, or any upper-income family buys the house and rents the garage apartment to a grad student or air bnb's it for game days.

^^^ and the elbow-rubbing alumni network means you wouldn't actually have to put it on air bnb for the riff raff -- use a realtor/property manager to rent to friends and friends of friends.

Shocking

Agree, but the quality of life in the South is much better than in most of the US. Those who criticize the South have probably never lived there.

+1

I’ve lived there and I never would again, nor would I want my children to move there.

The "MS is at the bottom" academically thing is very dated. Try this:

https://www.nationsreportcard.gov/profiles/stateprofile?chort=1&sub=MAT&sj=AL&sfj=NP&st=MN&year=2013R3

If I lived in DC (or even Maryland) I wouldn't be throwing stones at Mississippi's educational system. DC state scores from 2022 are only rescued from being #52 by Puerto Rico and New Mexico. All of the Southern states have moved up considerably. MS scores for 4th grade math are 1 point off the national average while MD is 5 points below and DC is 11 points below. Alabama does better than MD. VA is 1 point better than the national average, so not a lot to brag about there, either. MS is a point above the national average for 4th grade reading, while DC and MD are 9 and 4 points below, respectively.

DP. There's nothing in that actual study that contradicts what pp said. There's a nice chart on p. 17 that shows that Southern schools are more integrated than the national average, and much more so than Midwestern or Northeastern schools.

https://www.gao.gov/assets/gao-22-104737.pdf

"The Midwest and the Northeast had the highest percentages of predominantly same-race/ethnicity schools, and the majority of these schools were predominantly White (see figs. 6 and 7)."

It is amusing to hear people from DC talk about rich people not wanting their kids in schools with poor kids. I mean, unless, you want to take the view that this is something they know first hand? The highest private school enrollment rate in the country as a % of school age population is DC, and it's not even close. DC is 28%, Wisconsin is second at 17% and Mississippi is about halfway down the list at 9%. Louisiana is the only southern state in the top 15 (at 16%), and I suspect that's the result of a large Catholic population. FWIW, that DC number doesn't include charter schools, which are counted separately.

huh?
Segregation has historically been associated with the Jim Crow laws of the South. But the report finds that, in the 2020-21 school year, the highest percentage of schools serving a predominantly single-race/ethnicity student population – whether mostly white, mostly Hispanic or mostly Black etc. – were in the Northeast and the Midwest.
