Cleaned out mom's home...what to do with all the crystal and china??

Some of my favorite glasses came from a lovely neighbor who had a piece of Waterford on her kitchen counter that I admired and referred to by the name of the pattern. I said it was the pattern I really liked when we were registering for wedding presents (137 years ago, obviously) but that my mother talked me out of, saying the groom ought to get to pick out something. (Mom had chosen the sterling and the China, but that’s another story).

She gave me a set of the wine glasses and old fashioned glasses; she was desperately trying to rehome stuff she inherited from her mother in law.

I treasure these now!

So, OP if it’s Colleen you have, I’m sure we can work something out!

I love to use the fancy stuff, and I love to add to my collection(s).

Why don’t I ever see the patterns I’m looking for in cheap Facebook marketplace posts or at thrift stores?

I wish I would cross paths with all of these people who hate inheriting China, crystal, and silver (sob!).

I'm not trying to be snarky. I love decorating a beautiful table for different occasions, especially Thanksgiving and Christmas, with the beautifil crystal, china and silver from different family members. It is very sentimental to me and makes for very special times with my family and friends.

OP here. I think part of the challenge I have is I already have my own set of china that I use daily. 25 plus years ago a lot of us still registered for china. In addition to my mother's extensive crystal and jasperware collection, I am also left with one set of china from 1929 which was my grandmother She wanted me to keep this art deco set too. So I think fir me it is the sheer volume thatvus is the issue. It's good the younger generation doesn't register for fine china as much anymore. If they really need some they can probably ask around within the family. I was looking at a waterford pitcher I have from her, from the 1980s. I'm going to use it as a water jug for dinner. It's actually quite attractive bc it has no handle and has a slightly more contemporary lines.

If you keep any china and crystal, you must use it often. As long as you ae using it, displaying it, repurposing it, gifting it...it is all wonderful.

I would love to have some of your crystal, OP! DH and I lived in a tiny apartment when we were married and didn't register for China or crystal because we didn't have any space. My MIL has beautiful stuff from her own wedding, her mother, and her mother's mother, but it's all going to my SIL, we won't get any of it. I've searched on FB Marketplace, eBay, and craigslist, and stuff around here (DMV) is selling for $$$$$.

I inherited a lot of my mom's china, glassware, and porcelain figurines. There are five or six moving boxes of it that have been in my house for the last nine months. I know I'm going to feel bad and guilty if I donate it to Goodwill, because she loved it all so much. Yet the prospect of somehow dealing with it all is so exhausting. I already know eBay will be more trouble than it's worth, especially packing it and shipping it.

I sold my mom's "good furniture" through a consignment house. They were very picky about what they took. It was kinda worth it and at least it got a lot of bulky items off my hands. Most of it went to Goodwill.

I've had a hard time actually giving some of her stuff away on FB - which is a pretty clear sign it has no value and should go to Goodwill.

Was so glad to hear about Weschler's in Rockville, I did not know about them! They're probably gonna tell me "nah donate this stuff" but at least if they do, I'll feel like I did the right thing.

Really? If I were a refugee I would not want crystal wine glasses and highball glasses taking up space in my small kitchen. I would want those think glass Ikea water cups that don't break as easily.

If I were a refugee, I’d definitely want them! They would make my place look beautiful! Plus, even if they break, you can easily get more for free, as this thread illustrates that you can’t even give this stuff away for free.

Boy do I feel you! When my grandfather died my father flew out to his house and took ALL of it straight to the pawn shop for cash. It was to die for and he didn't save me so much as a fork and spoon set.
