My husband went to Oberlin and visited Cleveland many times. |
Well there's a textbook example of whataboutism. The Gibson family that own the bakery in Oberlin have made racists statements. That was conclusively demonstrated by Facebook posts that weren't admissable at the trial. And they opted to bleed the school that drives most of the economy of the town of vast punitive as well as compensatory damages. And now they're a beloved cause of stupid "it's blacks who are really the racists" RWNJs across the country. That's not a reason to avoid Oberlin. For many it's a reason to avoid Gibson's. |
I also "visited" many times but it's not going to be part of your daily life. It's an hour away, with a car. Being an hour from Cleveland isn't the best way to sell someone on Oberlin, is what I am saying. |
It’s a half hour away at most. My Obie DC goes to Cleveland at least once a month for various reasons including restaurants and museums. |
That's great - maybe I am remembering wrong or the highways have changed. When I was there, going into Cleveland was an occasional treat but I guess my experience, in addition to being ancient, isn't universal. |
My DC liked Oberlin but did not like the area around it....you'll have to see if your daughter wants somewhere with more of a city like Brown. Mine did. Good to visit and clarify these preferences as they did not occur to DC until visiting different campuses. |
I was just there - I’m the PP who toured a few months ago. School says airport is 25 minutes away. It took at least that long to get from the airport to the freaking rental car place, but once we finally started driving, it was about 28 minutes to Hotel Oberlin. I’d say downtown Cleveland is 35 or so minutes. It was an easy, flat drive. ———— Re: Cleveland And don’t forget the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! |
| I think the frequency of Cleveland trips depends on whether you have a car or not. My DD doesn't and usually only goes a few times a semester on school-sponsored trips to basketball or baseball games, Crocker Park, Hamilton, etc. However, one of her friends has a car and volunteers at the Cleveland Clinic every week for a couple hours and makes more frequent trips. |
Please provide proof of this accusation. Multiple local townspeople and employees, who were POC, testified in court to the contrary. Are you saying all those people are liars that perjured themselves? |
| Cleveland should not factor at all into picking a school like Oberlin. It will mainly be used for the airport. Your DC needs to want to go to a SLAC where their life revolves around academics and the college itself. My child actually wanted a school like that (but doesn’t go to Oberlin). |
so paying up makes it all go away? pathetic, Enjoy Oberlin, your kid belongs there if that is how you raised him/her/she/they/them to think |
https://chroniclet.com/news/276664/tv-station-allyn-d-gibson-made-racist-facebook-posts-in-2016/ https://www.news5cleveland.com/news/local-news/oh-lorain/judge-unseals-new-evidence-in-gibson-bakery-lawsuit-against-oberlin-college The social medial posts of the guy who tackled the student were sealed and not admitted at the trial because they were deemed prejudicial When they were unsealed, they contains such lovely statements as “not my fault all black people in this area suck”. This was before the incident. So was “if these lazy ***** want to start work, they could earn their own money”. And— people call me racist all the time. “100% of those people deserve to die. **** them all to he11”. How about “slavery has been around since before we were a country” followed by a nice rant about racism again him as a white male and poor black people deserve to be that way. Sounds like he was in fact a bit of a racist, no? Remember, all this happened the week after Trump was elected. #MAGA. |
Not sure who you are yelling at. I lived there, and I think it’s a better city than DC in many ways. But is has a sad reputation that it just can’t shake. Plus, it’s more than a half hour away. Just as an fyi, Green Bay has a lot to offer. Don’t judge it. |
It is not more than a half hour away. It’s just not. |
DP. This was a really big, really bad mistake, though. Not sure if it had anything to do with becoming the 39th-ranked national liberal arts college in the key US News rankings which typically appear in September each year. |
