I believe they require the Common App prompt OR a personal essay but only if you are test optional and also if you want to be considered for merit scholarships.

VT would not have been a safe bet for my kid. We toured Pitt and he never looked back. He was one and done on SATs Junior year, applied & was accepted early Sr year. Made life really great. And he loves Pitt.

I went to Pitt, it's a good school. Please don't fight with bratty teens about it. They just want to get a rise out of you.

As someone who lives in PA there's a stigma against admitting that you got rejected from any of the state-related universities. You see it with parents who say their kid is going to "Penn State" and don't say which campus etc. On top of that stigma, Pitt has a more self-selecting student body. It's not a fun school--its full of PA's AP kid elite school rejects and they kill the vibe for everyone else. It also has a reputation for harder classes, and is on the less populous side of the state.

PSU fan salty that Pitt’s SAT averages are higher than PSU — so makes up sh*t that Pitt is less fun. Sure, enjoy happy valley. But Pitt is great.

Not a PSU fan—I went to Pitt and think it’s the better school! PSU is broke and not academically rigorous. But it attracts more students and applicants because it is fun and accessible! Pitt positions its undergraduate program as a safety school for top universities. That’s fine! But it’s a different business model than PSU. You get higher SAT scores, better outcomes (especially for grad school) but also less fun and worse vibes.

When is the last time you were in Oakland?

Several months ago, I think it’s great! But for prospective students who aren’t as focused on academics, the parties at PSU beat Oakland and Pittsburgh

My 2022 daughter was deferred EA and then waitlisted. 3.5 UW and 1270 SAT. Was accepted on May 2, after she deposited somewhere else, and not nearly as high ranked. Decided to keep with other decision because by then she met roommates online, went to admit student day, and she got a nice merit package there.

+1. Be careful. Admissions are brutal right now. Your kid may end up being a "loser" too. For folks reading these threads who have a kid in the admissions process. Do not put down these safety schools (or other schools you see as safeties). Your kid (and their friends) may end up at these safeties. No need to sound like an a**hole. Just keep opinions to yourself.

THIS. Our close friends have a son who applied to our state flagship (along with several targets and a couple of reaches). UW 4.0, 1400 SAT, varsity athlete/captain, tons of community service hours, etc., etc., etc. Did.not.get.in.anywhere!!!!!!! Literally they (and the HS counselor) were stunned. It just makes no sense. He is spending this year working and regrouping and applying again now to schools and praying for the best. There really is no rhyme or reason right now. Please be kind and understand that it is a battle zone out there and these poor kids are feeling intense pressure.

I’m sorry to hear that. I suspect someone didn’t have the proper definition of a target. I’ve seen that on CC when a parent there refers to UMD as a “safety.” I hope this young person finds meaningful work this year and looks back on this as positive time despite the unexpected outcomes.
