2023-24 draft calendar scenarios to be reviewed

There is a resolution that says, "WHERAS, The 2022–2023 Traditional and Innovative School Year Calendars may be modified
to make Thursday, December 29 and Friday, December 30, 2022; Wednesday, April 5
and Thursday, April 6, 2023, systemwide closure days for Montgomery County Public Schools;"

I am not sure, but I think it means that they are giving administrators those days off.

I wish they were just not constantly moving stuff around with less than a hears notice. Would HS sports tryouts move up as well?

Agree. They need to have some consistency from great to year. Incredibly frustrating when it changes yearly.

It would also be helpful if they announced the calendar further in advance!

They revised the calendar graphics on the last three pages:

The policy committee agreed to send all 4 scenarios to the full board to be discussed on the 25th. There was a suggestion that the 5-day weekend in February around President's Day be considered for more of the options. Perhaps in lieu of the 2-week winter break.

Meaning, there would still be a week + a day winter break.

Thanks for the new link PP. In the past, when they thought about starting a full week earlier, they announced it the year before to give families time to plan. They did not announce it less than a calendar year out. If they want to start that much earlier, they should plan further ahead. Of course, the change did not happen last time because of the Hogan Ocean City order.

I don't really understand why C starts only 2 school days earlier, and yet ends 6 calendar days earlier. The June 18 end date, which they have put on Option D (the only one with the Monday before Labor Day start date) is too late, IMO. They should be shooting to end as close to Memorial Day as possible.

I am also not a fan of the extended Thanksgiving Break. For those of us who work, who takes a full week at Thanksgiving, and then another full week at the end of the year? The half days are enough of a pain.

Yeah a lot of families vacation that last week of summer because there are so few camps- I was actually just about to book something that week myself. They really need to announce that sort of change earlier.

I like the idea of a longer break in February over a longer break at Christmas or thanksgiving, although of those two Id prefer thanksgiving. It would give more flexibility for traveling on the relatively less busy days.

Option C is Thurs. Aug. 24, 2023 through Wed. June 12, 2024, and Option D is Mon. Aug. 28, 2023 through Fri. June 14, 2024.

Thanks for the update! And I bet they read dcum and liked our suggestion of a possible Feb break.

Ditto - I would quit and become a much needed substitute instead.

How many vacant sub positions were at your school today? Several at mine - many combined classrooms

Ugh, no! I’d prefer to start after Labor Day.

+1. I was initially skeptical of starting after LD but actually like it now. Allows more continuity instead of a silly three-day weekend after the first week.

I wish they’d eliminate half days. They are a joke and a hardship for working families. Why not just combine these half days in some way or take the full day off. Enough already.

This is what I would really like to see too. As a parent who also works for MCPS, half days are the worst.

I don't think they're very concerned about the needs of working parents.

The half days don't benefit the kids at all but have the same fixed transportation costs. They should try to make each day count not do the minimum by finding ways to skirt state regulations.
