Not-Halloween Halloween celebrations--name your school

You all may recall, if you are middle aged, that we did not have partied and parades in the schools. Why? Because we were out trick or treating, unsupervised of course! School parties and parades developed as an alternative for families who don’t live in safe areas (who couldn’t safely celebrate Halloween). Same thing for the trunk thing that some schools do.

I don’t think you’re going to get rid of Halloween MCPS, and I don’t think you’ve gotten all the stakeholder feedback. Time to rethink this one. Halloween dances and haunted houses create a SAFE SPACE for many children.

There is no good reason for MCPS to ‘cancel’ Halloween in schools. This is so wrong and disappointing.

It’s terrible on so many levels. I’m not sure who the stakeholders are who drive this decision but it seems very unfair.

I love my DC's school but the overly politically correct stuff can be annoying. American holidays like Halloween and Valentine's Day are unmentionable, but it's not only ok to mention Arabic and Jewish holidays, but they are recognized and embraced.

Why can't we celebrate the American holidays of Halloween and St Valentines Day?

My child's elementary school canceled Halloween years before Covid happened.

Same for us. Had nothing to do with Covid. They cancelled it due to changing demographics in the County and the desire to cater to religious groups.

This is just how a super ‘liberal, progressive’ county works. MCPS is just following the desires of its liberal voter base.

Yet another reason to move to DCPS, where Halloween/costume parades are still allowed.

I hope Montgomery County is stepping up to provide safe alternative ways to celebrate Halloween, since the schools no longer are.

And not some zoom event either!

i am so thankful on so many levels that my kid's mcps school ES still celebrates both valentines day and halloween. we are not in a progressive part of a county. so these holidays have not been completely cancelled from mcps, but i guess we are a dying breed :/

these holidays are a great opportunity to learn about american culture, to embrace fun, spooky or lovey dovey things, and to get creative. why is american culture apparently "wrong" to progressives? :/

Really? Not at the DCPS schools where I've worked!

When did America claim them?

They're really into sowing grievance . They think creating a sense of persecution will help their agenda. Fox news does it all the time.

Nah, you’ve got it backwards. In the case of ‘cancelling’ Halloween, it’s the religious crazies (from a variety of religious backgrounds - Christian, Muslim, Jewish) who oppose Halloween. They are the ones sowing grievance and playing the victim because their kids are being ‘left out’.

everyone has an axe to grind these days. Blacks, Whites,.Latinos, Asians.LBGtQ++++, elderly, youth, etc. etc. we are all looking to get offended over something. this is a game the politicians and the media like to play with us. That is why there is so much divide and so much hate. Essentially, we are all going to be the same. And we'll still find a reason to be annoyed.

Yes. celebrate diversity until someone complains and then just erase it.

Unlikely the County takes this on. Drag Queen Story Hour is allowed, but Halloween is off-limits.
