+1 I'd go with this. Slow it down. I considered this for my now 9th grader in H Alg2 back in 7th grade at the end of covid because I was not sure how much Alg 1 DC was getting. Still on the table as far as I'm concerned. DC is not interested in STEM so why be on the advanced track. |
| MCPS is offering free tutoring. Take advantage of it through Tutor Me. No reason why kids should struggle and not get support, if its offered for free. |
Your point about on grade v honors makes a lot of sense to me. DC does not have greater number sense. I don’t see how regular will solve that problem. After summer school, which class did you kid take? |
| What do you guys think of Khan Academy? Should the kid start straight at Algebra 2 or go through algebra 1 to brush up/relearn the basic concepts? |
The easy IB math. The one that I think is two years and SL. They're doing okay so far... Rocking a high C. Grade would be higher but they bombed one test. |
If your kid does an SAT practice test or the PSAT, Khan will point out where the gaps are. I’d then focus on all the Algebra-related ones, regardless of whether covered in Alg 1 or 2. |
Agreed. |
He took algebra 1 in 8th grade in public school and got an A. Most private schools require placement tests for all incoming freshmen for math and foreign language. I guess that A didn’t mean much because he and his friends had to retake algebra 1 in 9th grade and he got a C. Public school grades are pretty meaningless. I was always surprised that he got straight As in middle school. His work was not A work in any way, shape or form. |
Are you MCPS, as most kids who are bright take Algebra in 7th, some 6th. Sounds like your kid isn't very strong in math. And, it sounds like your kid had bad teachers and you didn't look over the homework/classwork and work with him to help him. |
