Private & Independent Schools
#1-Any HOS who stays is going to have to be okay with the fact that he/she don't really run this school. The higher ups do. You just need to be a good puppet. Anyone with any leadership skills or an intellectual brain won't stay. To say that "there are no signs that he's going anywhere" is naive. Let's see if he can make it 2 full years before saying those kinds of things. It's sad that someone who has stuck around this long (Over a year!!) represents stability because of how jaded and traumatized this school community is by previous departures. #2- Isn't that what every parent dreams of for their children? To absolutely crush standardized exams for the rest of their life?? Wow! #4-She didn't leave. She was promoted. To Regional Director of their East Coast Schools. This is the type of organization that promotes incompetent people, as long as they are robots for the money-grubbing private equity folks at the top. The bottom line-- " If things outside of what goes on in the classroom are important to you, you're best served sending your kid elsewhere." Like culture, climate, general environment, school stability, etc.! |
| The niche rankings have never been accurate, but this year they are totally ludicrous. |
Just checked. BASIS McLean is ranked very top in the whole DC area: #2 best high school for stem (only after TJ) #3 best private K-12 #4 best private high school #3 best college prep private high Not surprised for the stem and college prep categories . But surprised it is ranked #3 for k-12 private school and #4 for best private high school. There are so many top private schools in this area. |
Exactly right on all points. |
When application season comes, watch the DCUM threads carefully (there are many debating where to apply) and see how many times BIM is even mentioned. Since this forum represents probably several hundred private school parents, it's a reasonable survey size. BIM won't be top 5 for anyone there. It will hardly be mentioned or noticed. Like I said before, the BIM budget can't spend Niche rating points. Real checks from real parents matter. What we know now is that BIM will enter its 8th year next year with no active plan to finish out the second half of their building because they don't have enough students to justify it. |
I heard that the BIM graduates performed very well in college. Nothing wrong focusing on academics during high school years. They are also very talented and outstanding in other ECs. |
Things change and in recent years, the schools usually mentioned here have gotten more competitive so there are quality students available for Basis. Don’t be surprised if more schools start to emerge that aren’t usually spoken about on DCUM |

Your premise is flawed. Pick a top 5 U.S. News university, and that university will not be in the top 5 choices of a vast majority of college applicants. Applications and revenue do not determine what makes a top school (well, according to any well known ranking organizations; if you’re arguing about rankings as a generic matter, that’s a separate discussion). Agreed on the latter point about the school needing to finish the building which was what they committed to. |

That's why so many parents won't trust them. You never know what they are going to backtrack and refuse to do next after promising everyone everything. If Niche included management stability and integrity in their ratings (which have a profound effect on the school) then it would be a more accurate list. Parents do that, hence taking the collective verdict from DCUM over one jacked up ratings system. |
Flint Hill is the top school in NoVA. why wouldnt it top the charts? |
|
People need to just be realistic and stop all of the noise. BIM is what it is. A school with unstable/incompetent management that attracts very smart kids who have academic opportunities that they would not have elsewhere. These factors together yield favorable results for BIM in Niche.
These kids would get into top schools regardless of high school. They don’t care about a typical school culture or social environment. This is likely appealing to a very small self-selected group of students. If it works for them, who cares. Let them enjoy it. |
Damn. BASIS kicks ass. |
Flint Hill is far below Potomac in quality. I don't know a parent at FH that wouldn't agree that Potomac is the stronger of the two. I'm not sure what happened to Niche this year. The rating have never been accurate, but this year they are totally off. |
Check this website: https://www.niche.com/k12/search/best-private-high-schools/s/virginia/ Potomac is ranked higher than Flint Hill by Niche #1 BASIS #2 Madeira #3 Potomac #4 Episcopal #5 Woodberry #6 Flint Hill |
