Ordering 1/3 of a pound?

I sometimes say 10 slices or how ever many.

If you really want to mess with them, order your food by the gram.

My kids thought I was crazy, but after tossing uneaten $$ smoked salmon for the last time, they’ll need to help me out and just eat the extra. Or, I’ll be like someone’s dad and order x slices - love it!

Order 1/4 if you are so concerned about waste. Many times they go over anyhow and so you will get closer to your desired amount. Agree they are annoyed.

So they said in the schools dating back to the 70's I hear!

This will sound bad, but often the person working behind the deli counter at Safeway is not the brightest in math.
If I want 1/3 of a lb, I'll ask them to give "a bit less that half a pound". Or I'll order by number of slices.

Sure. It's normal. 1/4 is often nothing and 1/2 lb too much. Especially if you're single. There is absolutely nothing magical about 1/4 or 1/2 lb.

They never understand what I say whether it's a third or quarter of a pound, unless I say "the scale should say point two five" and even then they often don't get it.

Every single place with a scale should have a cheat sheet taped nearby that has a chart explaining the conversion for whoever is working there.

So simple. Just ask for 0.33333333333333333333
