UVA admissions from NOVA public schools

Did he apply ED?

They truly believe that providing high level information that doesn’t apply to each high school, or anecdotes of high stat rejections, will scare people off. There are a lot of crazy people on DCUM and I don’t put it past them to think this way.

And getting crazier. Throw in the bots and misinformation trolls and you’ve got a poisonous stew. I’m heading on over to that old “Goodbye DCUM” thread.

Unless something were to dramatically shift a school’s underlying demographics, it’s probably fair to say that about the same percent each year will meet UVA’s standards. What are those standards? As another poster mentioned, it’s roughly top 5% of class, 33+ ACT, 1450+ SAT, 8+ AP classes, and 4.35+ GPA (recently this has been inflated due to COVID grades). If a school has 500 kids, 5% is 25 kids. That’s about the number that get admitted.

A previous poster mentioned that FCPS has approximately a 30% acceptance rate. Way more than 5.

They mean that the top 5% is about 25 kids. The top 5% being a typical line in the sand between getting into UVA and not getting in within NOVA schools.

You’re assuming that the entire top 5% of the class applies to UVA, which is definitely not the case anywhere.

It’s probably very close. Even if kids want to attend Ivies, everyone knows those schools are crapshoots. UVA is frequently a backup for even the brightest kids in NOVA.

I had four kids, all at the top of their class. Two applied to UVA (and went). The other two had no interest in applying. I had to twist her arm to get her to apply to William & Mary, which she got into and spurned. No doubt UVA would have taken her, but she’s not counted in any of the statistics.

I really doubt we’re all that atypical.

This, most of the top 5% is going to apply to UVA for no other reason than as a safety.

As I just demonstrated this is not true. Plus what on earth are you talking about? We are talking about how hard it is to get into UVA; nobody but the absolute top student is applying there as a safety. You need to move on to another thread.

I wonder if these posters are just telling themselves this because their own kids didn’t get in.

What kind of moron can’t get accepted into UVA?!? My DC applied to 10 schools, got accepted into every one of them, and UVA was never even a contender. DC ended up going to Princeton. Pathetic that anyone would even feel it necessary to apply to such a poorly rated school.

Ok you can go back to college confidential and Reddit now, sweetie. You’ve had your fun with the grown ups.

Not that poster, but if you’re getting ready to say that he wouldn’t have gotten in had he not applied ED, well, yeah maybe but just nobody else does either. That’s the way the game is played.

I was under the impression that if you are top 10% of your class, you will likely get into UVA. We are zoned for Langley. I know ~20 kids went to UVA from Langley this year. ~50 out of 500 kids gaining acceptance sounds right.

Let say student A (Langley HS high performance school) and student B (Annandale HS low performance school) with identical GPAs, SAT/ACT scores, same ECs. There is a very good chance that student B will get accepted to UVA while student A will get rejected.

This.

I started the UVA vs Georgetown thread. My DS doesn’t want to go to UVA. He is at the top of is class. I know UVA isn’t a safety. It is a target.

He also likes Penn, Johns Hopkins, Columbia and Cornell. I think he would be disappointed if he only got into UVA.

Not in my kids school. Why is it so hard to understand that your worldview is NOT everyone elses? I posted that my kid was top 2%. He did byo apply to ivies as he wouldn’t have gotten in. The top ranked kid got into an Ivy but chose a lesser school for a full ride. The number 2 kid went to UVA. My DS was number 6, he’s at UVA. No one else in the top ten went anywhere better than UVA, in fact come to think of it most of them did go to UVA or chose a full ride at a lesser program. Your world is not everyone else’s. This is in Loudoun.

Many choose UVA because they can graduate without a ton of debt. Although I got into Brown and Yale, I picked UVA because I didn't want 200k in loan debt.
