Ding dong ditching and cops brought home

8th graders are not so little anymore. Mine is almost 5'.8" and some of his friends have deep voices and mustaches. LOL.

This.

Is there anything actually illegal happening here?

I'm not going to argue that this was a "nice" or "neighborly" thing to do, but it seems pretty harmless.

They weren’t charged with doing anything illegal.

Emden of its not illegal its stupid. Like the police said people have guns and will use them. Right canderas are everywhere. It's not like the old days where you can set off cherry bombs at the park.

It’s not stupid. It’s nasty. They’re waking up kids, the elderly, people who are trying to get some decent sleep for an early morning at work. Where is the empathy?

I think this is the angle that you should take when talking with your kid about it. No, don't ground them for a month, but do give some sort of punishment. If they will tell you which houses, perhaps you should go over there with them to apologize and offer to do some yard work for the homeowner. If they can't (or don't want to) remember which houses, then take away phones and screens for a couple of days and have them do chores at your house. Remind them that they need to be very, very careful and think of scared people with guns in their homes. Tell them that you never ever again want the cops to come to your door to discuss your son.

Exactly. Which is why it could have given some poor woman a heart attack. Imagine some woman with a history of sexual assault seeing a bunch of tall teen men banging on her door at night.

I thought this was a game to play at like 5pm when you were in third grade ? THATS not scary . Grown ass looking 14 year old young men in the middle of the night? Yeah no

Fine. It's nasty (in your mind, but we'll go with that). Still not illegal, and calling the police (or pulling a gun!!) is absurd.

It is illegal, which is the part that is absurd.

A ding dong ditch is illegal? OK. Can I get a cite for that, please?

We're gonna need a lockup around Halloween for all the elementary schoolers in my neighborhood.

I don’t think what they did is a big deal, but if there were cops present I think you have to call the parents right away.

I don’t think ding dong ditch is that big of a deal, honestly. Kids did that all the time when I was growing up. Same with TPing people’s houses. They’re kid pranks. The problem is everyone else these days. All of you getting so upset if someone rings your doorbell at night is a bit crazy to me. Most people have Ring doorbells now so you can see exactly what’s happening. Sure, be annoyed but some of y’all are a bit over the top about this.

That said, I do agree with the cops that the kids could’ve been in a bad situation if they faced an unstable or angry homeowner and for that reason, it probably isn’t a good idea to do these days.

This. Maybe not sent home, but parents told immediately.

And wtf are you doing letting them hang out in a park at ten pm??? Nothing good will come of that

+1

I never ran the neighborhood at 10 pm and I never rang people’s doorbells and ran. And I don’t know any kids who did. We did do prank calls via the telephone though.

Prude!

I’m ok with that.

Again, the cops never wrote up the kids for an illegal act. This is along the lines of a noise violation in terms of police involvement. It’s a disruption to the peace of the neighborhood and a nuisance to others.

I will say, I am enjoying the outrage of two groups here: The group claiming mom is negligent for letting this little vulnerable babies out at 10 pm, coupled with the "these men at someones door could give a rape survivor a heart attack".

Hyperbole at its finest from both camps of pearl clutchers.

Sounds like it's annoying . . . but not illegal. Just like I said.

+1. People are so ridiculous.

It's mischief not criminal. Adults are insane. I wouldn’t call the cops and waste their time over innocent fun and I wouldn't punish them.

"Very safe master planned community" does not go with "would not hesitate to use a gun"
