DC schools September vaccine mandate does not apply to elementary school children

Anonymous
PP again but I should add that DCPS’ Covid rules were not uniformly enforced by any means. One HS was not allowed to randomly test students even if they didn’t opt out of testing. They also were not allowed to ask a student’s vaccination status. So ultimately kids at that school did not quarantine when a close contact regardless of vaccination status, unless they chose to. This school has a demographic with higher SES. DCPS can take their equity lenses and really shove it.

Hope that’s true. But then, why even have one?

My guess is to appease nervous teachers and parents who still want extreme Covid mitigation measures (and yes I think quarantines for every exposure for unvaccinated individuals, forcing teachers to get boosters and Covid vaccine mandates are extreme measures).

I wish that instead of appeasing nervous people we were talking more honestly about where we are actually at with Covid. For people who still believe our school strategy should be premised on zero Covid as the only acceptable goal, what is their proposed plan given the limitations of vaccines, quarantines, and masks? I just get confused sometimes as to what the demand is.

It’s all optics. They say there’s a mandate because it’s good optics. They won’t enforce it because that would be bad optics. There is no substance to it.

This is it exactly.

What about boosters? My federal agency required boosters to be considered ‘up to date’.

Will DCPS also require boosters for every student over the age of 12?

You are likely correct.

Though, honestly, I truly feel that any kind of vaccine mandate for school-aged kids is really BAD optics. It shows a complete disregard for science and is completely against all medical ethics.

Agreed. And I’ll go a step further and say they are overreach and unnecessary.

These measures are not justified by the data we currently have. Why are our public health officials free to impose such arbitrary mandates on our children?

Because 1) kids are least affected and 2) vaccines don't stop transmission?

Wow, fascinating. All my posts that are anti-mandate in the Political forum get deleted right away.

It also suggests that OTHER vaccines are 1) not important, and 2) not enforced.

The covid vaccine mandate for schoolkids in DC is plainly bad policy that will actually do more harm than good. The Council who proposed it and the Mayor who approved it should be ashamed.

Yet people wanted teachers to be forced to be vaccinated…

I mean the bright side is you get a choice but since there will be plenty of unvaccinated kids that just means quarantines will continue.

No, we should stop exposure quarantining irrespective of the outcome of the mandate discussion.

FWIW, I have been against vax mandates for teachers AND students. And I agree that the exposure quarantines are not necessary. It is all really bad public health policy that is not based on science.

I am a healthcare worker and I gave up my DC license because of their ridiculous booster requirement. I’m vaxxed but did not want to get boosted.

We know, without a doubt that vaccinated people still spread Covid. There is no good reason to mandate Covid shots or boosters for anyone - teachers, students, building service staff.

I really hope parents push back on this. It is BS at this point, and an overreach by DCPS. Public school should not have barriers that include a vaccine that doesn’t prevent the spread of a disease that is pretty inconsequential in 99.99% of children.
