Cape Cod vs Nantucket vs Martha's Vineyard vs Maine vs Block Island

Anonymous
Maine has great ice cream and really cool beaches. The Cape is fun to tool around the bays and swim in the ponds.

I know Nantucket the best bc family has had places there for a long, long time. It is fun to walk the moors and take in the history.

Never been to MV, probably never will.

The thing about the Cape is that each and every town and also each area of town is truly different. Each and every beach is absolutely different. Do not believe anyone who tries to categorize or generalize anything regarding the Cape - those are the comments from people who have definitely NOT been there.

You do not have to pay this much to vacation there, or MV unless maybe you need a 10 room house with a pool in the backyard, etc.

Yes you do - a decent rental with central ac and a pool on Nantucket is at least $25k. Take away the pool and you can find something nice for $16 or $18. These would all likely be 4 or 5 bedrooms. The difference is these are beautiful houses, not mcmansionish outer banks houses shoved full of bedrooms

What is a “social aspect” of a beach and how would one “embarrass” themselves in discussing a beach vacation???

No offense, but people who are frequent New England beach visitors will not want to associate with you if you say you go to Alabama beaches.

Yeah I don’t get it. What is there to be embarrassed about. It’s fine to say, “oh I’ve never been, tell me about it.” Or “how was your trip? What did you enjoy the most?”

Are you trying to social climb and think this is need to know stuff or something?

I have a house on the Cape and am happy to “associate” with people who vacation elsewhere, wether it’s Alabama, South Carolina, Delaware, the south of France, or wherever.

The Block for us for life. We have been going for 12 years now and it is no longer sleepy and a secret. It is now too crowded. They need a limit on cars or golf carts, IMO. But, as soon as we get off the boat and check into our fav house, we breathe and enjoy life. Waking up to chickens from the nearby farm, hopping on our bikes for breakfast, and then off to Salty for fishing or our fav hidden Beach for great beach time. It is very well hidden so not many find it. The water is not too cold, and the breeze is divine. We stay all day with one of making our way to our fav Italian diner for food. We carved our names in a tree and love to go back and remember our memories. Our dream soon is to grab a slice for ourselves and then have our ashes sprinkled on our property here. The Block is not fancy but just life unplugged and beautiful!

Sounds great. I really want to check out Block Island for a week, but our extended family insists on having nearby activities for the kid (putt putt, shops, boardwalk, etc).

I'm raising my kid to just enjoy the land and nature, no need to have all that extraneous crap.

I know you said Block Island is getting "too crowded," but I imagine it can't be worse than the Cape, OBX, MD/DE beaches, etc - right?

We recently started going to the Little Compton area of RI and it was divine. The only issue there is beach access - it's tightly controlled by neighborhood and even road.

Also, the DC area has a lot of old money from NYC and New England. Not a long history of wealthy Southern families in DC given that they started the Civil War.

There are also direct flights to MV and Nantucket, so you are there in an hour more or less.
With the hot days of summer in DC, it's nice to go to a beach where it's somewhat cooler in the evening and you (ok, I) don't sweat the whole time.

Second this. Little Compton, Jamestown, and Watch Hill are all the most lovely towns in Rhode Island. You have wonderufl beaches nearby (if you're staying in Newport, Second Beach is fantastic!) and great history and beautiful homes to look at.

Have vacationed on BI for 19 summers. Yes, town can get crowded, but you can also be in splendid isolation in your rental if you like. Beaches are beautiful and sandy with manageable waves. We like the cape, too (Wellfleet) for bay swimming and kettle ponds, but the ocean swimming is rough in my opinion. YMMV.
