A bad economy is always a boon for public schools. |
I'm not even sure the achievement gap matters. Sure some people are into school, and others aren't. College isn't for everyone. In the end, as long as everyone has access to the same opportunities, I don't feel it really even matters. This is just trying to impose values on others who don't share them. |
I agree. Not everyone wants their kids to go to college. Unless college is free, it is not something everyone is going to want to do. It is completely unrealistic to make college the end goal for everyone. How many countries have free schooling for 13 years for everyone? |
Best troll post ever. I hope, at least! Yeah I totally agree – let’s also disallow studying for tests and preparing for class. |
+1 it’s like saying that’s close the achievement gap in sports and everyone should have the same 400 m time. 🙄😂 |
Np please back you claim of math skills mainly based on genetics. I personally don't think that is true. If one isn't provided with good teachers and expected to do poorly what do think will happen? |
Sorry, but if you add in early childhood research the pattern is set before age 2. By age 2 Hispanic children are the same a white in socialization but behind in vocabulary (in home language). There are initiatives to teach parents patterns of interaction that raise this (serve and return conversations etc) It is set very very early and the gap is there well before Kindergarten. |
Sorry, not sorry. And not convinced by your weak argument. For decades, pols pushed for more money to be thrown at expensive “head start” programs. The money’s been spent, but it has not meaningfully changed things. So your premise is faulty. |
Research. I don’t care about your opinion. I’m sure you don’t trust science, but here is the research. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4543291/ Here are the findings since you will not bother to read it: As has been suggested by others, children with greater vocabulary may be better able to regulate their behavior using self-talk or mental symbolic representations to control their impulses (Barkley, 1997; Vallotton & Ayoub, 2011). It is also possible that children who use more words are better able to express themselves and have a better sense of control in their environment, leading to less frustration accompanied by better growth in inhibitory control skills (Vallotton & Ayoub, 2011). The findings from the present study suggest that interventions aimed at improving school readiness skills for Spanish-speaking Hispanic children should start early and target early verbal abilities in the child’s home language. I am not talking about money, but how different cultures talk to their infants that in part make the achievement gap. That you are ignorant of early childhood research doesn’t make my premise faulty. That said, the biggest predictor of a child’s achievement in school is maternal income. Guess what Dobbs just did- took more women out of the workforce. SO if you are upset about money, you should know that the R’s just considerably widened the achievement gap and it will take more money to be pro-life. Glad you only get one vote- yours and mine cancel each other out!!! |
Your post flails about, but ultimately makes little sense. Federal head start programs do not work, and the research proves that fact: https://www.cato.org/blog/us-government-our-head-start-program-doesnt-work |
Oh you do put stock in research. The Cato institute is not well known for funding unbiased studies FYI. You are equating early childhood learning outcomes with Head Start and that is no where near what I am saying. That one means the other to you is irrational. Early childhood initiatives, particularly ones focusing on children younger than 2 are NOT usually covered by early head start. I am not advocating for that. Here is a model that could help that isn’t head start: https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2015/01/how-nurses-can-help-low-income-mothers/384485/ Many countries use models like this to help new moms, but the USA doesn’t. I will restate my last point to you. Abortion is now banned in many places. Although abortion is a last resort form of birth control (as well as a health issue for women) more Women will have to stay home because they will be unable to work and pay for day care. They will put off schooling to take care of kids AND This will bring down Mom’s pay over her life time. Educational outcomes are tied to Maternal income. When you bring down women’s pay, you bring down educational outcomes. Carry on my irrational friend. |
That’s not how correlation works. |
Ha. In this case it is causation. Raise maternal education levels, raise educational outcomes. Interestingly enough raise maternal education levels, you also raise GDP. Real men care about their communities, not just themselves. |
brick and mortar |
Maternal education is a large factor.
I live in a school pyramid with many highly educated women, and a very high percentage are SAHM. Not bringing in a penny of income and their children are high academic achievers. |
