Van Cleef Graduation Present

I had to look up what an R1 U is. Geeze. It's pretty sad that you think this is such a great accomplishment! Auburn (which until last year had a 70% acceptance rate) and Florida State are R1.

My HYPSM kid is getting a new computer for a graduation gift. She's not into ostentatious jewelry or anything other displays of wealth for that matter.

Her computer will cost $3K, so I'm spending the same amount of money as OP on her gift.

I also had never heard of an R1 university. I'm glad you're proud of your daughter graduating from Binghamton U or was it the Colorado School of Mines?

You had to look up R1. Really?

OP here. DD graduated from an R1 that is also a top school (think Georgetown/Northwestern/Tufts) so please keep your snark to yourself.

A new computer lasts for 5-8 years max. We'd like to get her something she will have and enjoy for decades.

Maybe something more timeless like a mikimoto necklace/Italian gold chain?

I have a string of pearls I thought were timeless. I used to wear them almost daily. But I haven't worn them in a decade, because they aren't in style. Hopefully they will come back at some point. Not sure anything is truly timeless so might as well go for what her age group likes. I personally like the VCA stuff.

Timeless is by definition never in or out of style.

OP, you really seem to want to buy your daughter this, and you know her better than we do. So why not just get it for her? If you don't want to get her something you think she'll stop wearing, I'm not sure there's any jewelry you can pick that is safe. Years ago I'd have said a Tank watch, but lots of people don't wear watches at all. I'm assuming she already has the classic earrings, so . . . .

I was responding to the PPs suggestion of a Mikimoto necklace being timeless. When I got mine I thought it was timeless too. I don't think there is anything fashion related that is truly timeless, although some things come back in style.

OP, I think a pair of 1 carat (per ear) round, diamond studs are a better gift. They are timeless, and can be worn at any age, in most any setting, dressed up, dressed down. For this one charm Alhambra necklace, it is sweet, but won't be worn for long, and certainly not in that many settings.

Since you are emphasizing the R1 status of her program I assume she is getting a PhD or MD? Maybe something related to her profession? If she is going into academia the VCA may be a little flashy.

Personally l don’t care for jewelry that is like free brand advertising, nor logo bags.

Not OP. I can’t believe how miserable some of the people on this board are.

Lol. I didn’t know what R1 was either. Apparently mine is attending one!

I don’t think branded jewelry is cool.

Another consideration is I bonds which currently are at a great interest rate, if you are looking for longevity in a gift.
10k today will grow significantly.

I got my DD some tiny 1/4 carat per ear diamond earrings, but I think she'll like them.
