Are you worried about the end of reproductive rights?

Anonymous
Absolutely. My relatives really want IVF and stem cell research to end.

I think IUI would continue however.

They’re not coming after anything. You will be fine.

Grandfathered into what law?

DC has extremely liberal abortion laws.
Are you not familiar with VA or it's governor? It's not a monolith. I could see the crazies swinging the state in another direction.

The governor doesn’t make the laws.
But he reflects the sentiments of voters and can influence state legislature.

Sonic he reflects the sentiments of voters then that’s what they want.

yeah, say what now? Louisiana is first up to bat with Rs pushing personhood at fertilization and classifying abortion as homicide - https://thehill.com/news/state-watch/3478611-bill-to-make-abortion-a-crime-of-homicide-in-louisiana-advances/

"HB813 looks to take things a step further to classify a person as the moment an egg is fertilized. It would provide the unborn fetus the same protections as someone who has been born and classify abortion as murder.
“The taking of a life is murder and it is illegal. Louisiana law currently fails to provide equal protection for human life. Persons are deemed unworthy of legal protection for no other reason than they are not yet born,” said McCormick.
Some fear this could lead to charges against women for homicide or battery in cases of miscarriage or in fertility treatments like IVF. In IVF treatments an egg is taken from the woman and fertilized by doctors. Then the egg is placed back into the uterus in hopes to begin a pregnancy. One attorney shared her struggle with the first fertilized egg not taking and not becoming a valid pregnancy. This bill would give those cells personhood. Such that anything that happens to them after could give rise to criminal prosecution. This criminalizes IVF,” said Sarah Omojola, a New Orleans attorney."

Which states are proposing changes to IVF?

Louisiana is moving towards life begins at fertilization with murder charges for abortions. The letter of the law pretty obviously applies to discarded embryos

My aunt & uncle are very religious republicans. They encountered infertility when trying to have kids.

They are both in their 80s now, and my aunt was too old for IVF when it came out but it wouldn't have mattered because they believe infertility is God's will. If a woman or man is unable to have their own kids, it's God's way of "keeping out" the bad genes. A survival of the fittest in their minds, if you will. According to them, the reason society is "going to hell in a handbasket" right now is because of too much medical intervention against God.

Any method to have a baby other than husband + wife is against God's plan in their eyes. This includes adoption, surrogacy, and fertility treatments.

So there are definitely people out there who would love to see there be an end to fertility treatments. My aunt and uncle also don't believe that a child born from a surrogate or obtained through adoption is ever "whole" in the eye's of God.

Tried that. No one in our relationship produces sperm though so...

None yet. Do you believe they only care about embryos in utero? And not embryos flushed down the drain at IVF clinics? Because that would be.... so illogical and inconsistent as to almost make me think the issue is not the babeez. Weird

Selective reduction anyone?

Laws can be changed. As we see. So don't get too comfortable in your assumptions.

Sorry, you can’t make this about the boomers. Barrett and Kavanaugh are not boomers and directly responsible.

Kavanaugh is the end of boomer generation, so yes, he is a boomer.

Np Nope not a boomer. You say 'end of boomer' but, most people say beginning of Generation X.

Kav(ernet) was born 1965; so was my sister. Not a boomer

There's no statute of limitations on murder. So if you selectively reduced embryos, or had them destroyed, I wonder what that means for you? Sure it was legal then but.... gosh let's hope there's no look back here.

Yes, because the burden of raising a child is mainly on women. Many men get women pregnant and then skip out on raising and providing for the child. This is really a disadvantage for women. Also, the government is not doing a good job with the foster system now, how is that going to work in the future?
