Am I going to go to prison? Expired driver's license...

Minimum sentencing guidelines have a mandatory two year term

If you live in DC you can honestly say the DMV has been closed during pandemic. My dh had to call about 20 times to get an appointment to get his renewed. I cannot speak for VA + MD

How else do you think our license plates get made?

All - OP said at the outset the he or she suffers from panic attacks. If you don't have something constructive to say, please try to refrain. I think saying that OP will go to jail may be funny to you, but it's cruel to say to someone who has an anxiety disorder.

OP - Were you able to get your license renewed? You may want to speak with a lawyer who handles traffic cases. They see these things all the time and will know what to do. I think that will be reassuring. You will probably spend some money, get this addressed, and put it behind you.

P.S. I am PP and want to add that you will get past this! See all these other posters who had a similar experience. No one went to jail!

If they kids shooting people and stealing cars aren't in jail, I can't see why an expired license would send you to the pokey. Stop doing illegal things in your car (you got caught with your expired license because you made an illegal left turn?!), renew your license and be respectful in court.

What more do you want?!

I was wondering if others had gone through something similar and had advice about what to expect.

Are you the OP?

The entire thread is false. PP was being sarcastic.

Thanks, everyone, for your compassionate and honest responses. I spoke to a lawyer who was reassuring.

OP, what area?

My DH was speeding in VA (I-85 returning from NC and it was an empty highway) and got a reckless driving citation for speeding AND a court appearance (optional). All of these "local" attorneys sent him letters offering to represent him in court. He tossed them and did not appear, again "optional," in court. He called in later to find the results and learned that in addition to a huge final and court costs, his drivers license was suspended for 30 days in VA. Fortunately we live and work in MD, and he did not violate, but in hindsight, this felt like a "pay to play" thing--- either pay the local attorneys $$$ and you don't get your license suspended, but still get big (deserved) fee for speeding, or don't pay a lawyer and get license suspended. For any VA ticket beyond something typical, I would do the free call with a local VA lawyer. Good luck!

So happy to hear this, OP! Next time you get anxious, just go over what the lawyer told you. You will be okay.

Thank you. FWIW, the lawyer told me I probably didn't even need him (no criminal record, first time driving without a license, etc), but I am paying for the peace of mind. He seemed to indicate it would be dismissed and told me not to worry. I then contacted the police who issued the citation for a copy, and they told me the same thing. I feel marginally better. Appreciate it.

Really not sure why people felt compelled to say I'd be spending two years in prison.
