Rice is amazing. We are in Houston. Just back from a Spring Break trip to NE-visited Gtown, AU, NYU, BArnard, BU. And just re-visited Rice yesterday (rising senior DS). Honestly I am thinking what an amazing combination we have here in town. There were kids biking on the bike loop at 10 pm at night--groups walking around, the library is buzzing, hearing about how much focus is on the undergrad division. Yes, DC/Boston more exciting than Houston. But so many things are special.

This. Visited University of Chicago, CMU, Johns Hopkins, Barnard and Rice. We made it a point to go on to each campus at night. It was a weekend and kids at Rice were coming back in groups after eating out (one said dining halls were closed on Fridays?), the campus was an amazing mix of being urban yet enclosed and beautiful. I can't imagine my kid walking around at 9:30pm in U of C and JHU.

Congrats to all, but my DD said no way in hell was she going to school in Texas due to what is going on politically. Same with FL.

Rice dining halls closed Saturday and Sunday evenings not Friday. It’s located in a very nice part of town next to the Texas medical center, super nice residential neighborhoods and a cute village square nearby with many stores and restaurants. Very safe there all times of the day or night.

In at UNC, UCLA, Amherst, NE and Pitt Honors (merit $), and a few others. Expect rejections to start tonight. Didn't like WashU, wish we had visited Rice.

Do you have to check which religion you are to apply to BC? As a non Catholic did you get an overtly religious vibe at BC or not? We’re touring there next month. Thank you!

Amherst has a more expensive list price at roughly $10k more per year than Rice for 2022-23 school year but Amherst gives more generous financial aid per capita w/it's $3.7 billion endowment for a student body size of 2000 kids.
Amherst actually costs $20k more per year for full pay or partial pay families. Need based financial aid policies are identical. Rice gives some merit scholarships as well but Amherst doesn’t.

Following for BC and Amherst.

^^^ Sorry -- wanted to comment on the idea of going to campus at night -- brilliant -- not only in terms of gauging safety, but also just catching the vibe.

My daughter is a current Rice student. She loves it and I am super pleased as a parent. Kids are down to earth, kind and collaborative. The residential college system is a huge positive. August-September were hot, but there is ac everywhere. It does rain often. The area is fantastic. My dd goes off campus often with her friends to grab food and likes to walk/run the loop. The trees are gorgeous! Housing is the only negative so far. Only 3 years on campus. Some residential colleges kick out sophomores, other juniors. We did find a walkable apartment for next year. There is so much student support in all areas and amazing opportunities. Really thrilled that Rice is where my daughter ended up. Their O Week orientation is phenomenal! It's a very special place!

DC got into Rice and UMich(OOS) (College of Engineering) Waitlist in Wash U. Unweight 4.0, 7AP (4's and 5's), 2 college UC credits, lot of EC.
It is going to be a hard decision between Rice and UMich. DC is leaning toward UMich.

Congratulations! What are your DC's top 3 choices and why? I'm also curious about your thoughts, especially cost, campus size & vibe, major and travel.

Top 3: Pre-med. Strategically, Brown because of the open curriculum and easy grading, kids are not stressed. UNC as a great premed feeder, very frinedly community and great campus/town, Tufts because of the possibility of acceptance into med-school junior year, not much of a town, saw very few students out and about on campus, likes the kids.

In at NW- not going, should have withdrawn application, but wanted to know. A few other apps out.

They are really different schools in really different places. Seems like kid should follow their gut instinct.

I want you to give up Brown for us but I think Brown would be the right choice to go! Being at NW with UChicago would be like being at GW knowing Georgetown is nearby. Tufts just too secluded, and UNC, so big.

GPA - 3.98 UW, 4.53 W (from a top Nova Highschool known for its course rigor)
SAT - 1560 ( single sitting) , ACT - 35
NMF, Good ECs, expected good LORs
It’s been one of her most favorite/ dream schools from the past 2 years and the craziness of this year made us wonder if we should have done ED. Grateful for yesterday's decision

Waitlisted at Wash U

Congratulations to everyone that got accepted and good luck to everyone else.

I find the parenthetical use above really obnoxious. No one cares that your kid got the SAT score in a single sitting but I guess you couldn’t resist.
