How do you feel about QR codes and pay ahead at sit-down restaurant?

Anonymous
I met a friend for lunch at BarTaco last week and had to do this. We hated it! It felt like doing homework. We were distracted trying to view a tiny menu on our phones, order, enter payment info, etc. Instead of chatting and catching up after not seeing each other in ages we were distracted and annoyed.

This! It is time consuming and distracting from just enjoying the convo

I have a tiny phone so its really hard to see a menu but if I knew ahead of time I'd look at the menu at home if I could. I would prefer to order/pay online especially if i can customize to put it in accurately but if someone is just dropping off food its more of a fast casual and no need for tipping.

But you don’t know at the strart of the meal that they’ll never come back to your table. But you’ve already tipped.

Or you don’t tip and they are slow with your food or do something to it.

Tipping shouldn’t be first.

I patronize The Roost more than any other place specifically because they have this system for all the restaurants in the building.

No inane small talk, no waiting to try to flag down a server, just put your order in and get it a few minutes later. Paying ahead of time is the best because you don't have to do the stupid dance of asking for the check, waiting for them to come back and take your card, then waiting again to sign the receipt.

I hope every restaurant switches to this system.

what if you need a refill or extra napkins or to tell them your food isn't hot? Press a button on the screen?

If I need a refill I order another drink. Napkins are on the table, if they were out I'd grab some from another table. If my food isn't hot I'd do absolutely nothing because I'm not the kind of Karen that complains to the manager about tiny inconveniences.

Receiving food that is supposed to be hot but isn't, is NOT a tiny inconvenience. Not having napkins on my table is NOT a tiny inconvenience. Wanting a refill and not getting one is NOT a tiny inconvenience.

You sound like a lazy wait person or lazy owner, PP. Guess I won't be coming to your restaurant ever again if you pull that stunt on me. And I will solve the pre-paid tip issue by disputing my bill with my credit card company.

I have not read any of the replies, but I haaaate QR codes in sit-down restaurants. As a mom with kids (who are too young for phones), I have to pull it up on my phone and
then it is a big rigamarole letting everyone see and pick what they want. It is a huge nuisance. I feel this was
NOT considered for families and I will always ask for a paper menu when we encounter this. We also do not go back if they do not have a regular menu. It is just too inconvenient and now how I want to deal with dining out, which is supposed to be relaxing and pleasurable. I do not care for businesses putting MORE work on my plate when I am supposed
to be the customer. It is like self-checkout lines! Please, can’t anyone work anymore? I have worked these service jobs and now when it is my turn to be the adult customer, it is STILl my job to do all this. Not right.

QR code just opens your browser on your phone and directs you to a pre-mapped site that you could access from the browser anyway-- usually the menu and online ordering of the public site.

It's not any more or any less secure than accessing via the browser.

It IS a huge PITA as others have said, esp if you don't have an account and need to set up an account for a one-time meal pay.

+1
I would be leaving that restaurant.

Imagine thinking having to spend 10 seconds getting up and grabbing a napkin from 10 feet away is anything but a tiny inconvenience.

I'm not a restaurant owner, lazy or otherwise, but I guarantee you if I was and you told me you would never patronize my restaurant if you had to endure the horror of picking up a napkin from the next table over, my response would be: "you promise?"

Also, you're now probably getting spam form both the restaurant and whatever list they sell customer's information to.

If you can seat someone at a set table, don't expect repeat business. It's not that complicated unless you are a fast food restaurant. I'm not PP and I'll get my own napkin, but if I'm getting my own napkin, having to flag a waiter down for a refill, and having to create an account in some half assed payment system, I'm definitely not tipping

I can guarantee you won't be a restaurant business owner for long with your attitude. That's a good thing for all of us. LOL. You sound like a bad joke.

I actually loved it when I went out with a group of friends as it eliminated split checks, etc. Unfortunately 2 of my friends couldn't figure it out, so the waitress spent more time with us than it would have taken to do a traditional order. I added a generous tip because I was so embarrassed a my friends' inability to adapt to the technology.

I have the QR codes for restaurant menus because I try to keep my phone away at restaurants. And I really, really hate it when dining with my kids who want to look at the menu themselves but don't have phones

It might be ok if they're trying to keep contact down but at this point in the pandemic it's unnecessary. I always ask for a real menu because I can't read the tiny menu. Also, if I don't have a napkin I flag someone down and ask for one. If my food isn't hot I flag someone down and send it back. If I want a refill on my drink I flag someone down and ask for it. If I have to do a lot of that stuff I leave 15% instead of the 20 or 25% I usually leave.
