UC Berkeley must slash new enrollment by a third unless high court intervenes

Does that mean they climb few spots in the national rankings?

No, they'll likely fall a bit.

Yeah, I think this is a both sides thing, but ultimately, I am more disgusted by the NIMBYs. They complain Cal doesn't house enough of its students, and also fight projects to build student housing. But also, Cal is used to steamrolling groups like this. They paid off the city of Berkely in an agreement, so the city itself is backing Cal here.

You mean Berkeley?

It’s called Cal. Outsiders know it as Berkeley.

Can people stop saying this? So obnoxious. We call it Berkeley in California too!! Promise!

Can confirm. I grew up in California and everyone I knew called it Berkeley. I had several friends and two of my SILs go there--they also called it Berkeley.

UCB lost the suit. The neighbors are willing to settle but UCB is not. They will be offering some students online fall and others spring entry.

+1 My mom was from California and she and her family all called it Berkeley. It’s the college football universe that calls it Cal.

My parents went to Cal in the 1960s and that’s what they call it. My siblings did, too, in the 1990s but they say Berkeley. Possibly generational.

They are incapable of providing the housing that the plaintiffs want to settle the suit. Maybe they can send out the plaintiff attorney's contact info with the denials and a nice paragraph saying they would have been accepted if not for the lawsuit.

I think people who live in the Bay Area call it Cal though, to distinguish it from the town.

6:41 poster here

Yes...my friends and SILs went in the late 80's/early 90s
And I think another pp above is right about it being a football thing to call it Cal. My husband is a huge college football fan and when I asked him what he calls it (I phrased it as "tell me the name of the college your sisters went to") he said "Berkeley." When I told him people here are insisting it's called "Cal" he replied "well that's what's on the football helmets."
They were from Concord, fwiw.

Cal parents here - yes, we were from Bay Area. Berkeley is a city.

(Btw, agreeing with you - not trying to distinguish town from city but realized it might read that way.)

Cal's "arrogance" or ridiculous state laws that weaponizes NIMBY-ism? Now the laws actually impact something that the UMC cares about, maybe they'll do something about it.

Sounds like the law is what it is. Cal just thought they didn't have to comply to those EXISTING laws. Whether or not you agree with them, you still have to comply.

That's the classic catch-22 with these types of law. The locals fought Cal's ability to build more student housing, and then used the law to limit their ability to accept students because they don't have sufficient housing. I agree that it "is what it is" now, but perhaps affected Californians will decide that they don't like giving NIMBYs this type of power.

Besides, what's up with people who move to a college town and then act all shocked that there are college students who want to live there? It's like people who move next to the airport and complain about airplane noise.
