| Unlike rest of the NMF who doesn't make scholar if they pick an ivy school, National Merit Foundation's top picks can attend any Ivy (none gives merit scholarships anymore) and still be an scholar? |
Yes, I think we had DD do that last year. That said, I'm not sure how much difference it will make to the colleges, as they already knew the students were semifinalists. |
Many full rides. Top 10 full ride colleges - https://collegeguidepost.com/scholarships/national-merit/full-ride-college-scholarships-national-merit-finalists/ Here are some well known public, private and SLACs that participate - https://www.collegetransitions.com/dataverse/national-merit-scholarships |
Does your keyboard not work to Google? https://collegeguidepost.com/scholarships/national-merit/full-ride-college-scholarships-national-merit-finalists/ Will you post again now and admit you are wrong? So annoying when people throw out definitive statements on subjects about which they possess no knowledge. |
BTW, there's nothing that says these are the "top picks." They are chosen based on a variety of data by committee. I would think they'd take into account of the candidates got college or corporate NM awards as those are usually renewable. |
| Have the local counties announced how many finalists they each have? MCPS? Fairfax? |
np - i am sure i don't want my kid to attend any of those 10. i am very certain. good lord. |
| If my kid hasn’t decided upon a school yet, should he still designate one for round 1 that is due tomorrow? I can’t understand if he should just pick one of the maybes so he doesn’t miss out on the scholarship or if he needs to wait until after he makes a final choice? Thanks for any insight! |
As I understand it, he should say undecided. "Tip #3: When indicating a college choice, make sure it is a school you will likely attend. If you are not sure, indicate “undecided” to protect yourself. Once a National Merit Scholarship offer is made by a college, it’s assumed that you will enroll there. Indicating “undecided” gives you the option to change your mind at the last minute. Note the April timeframe to make your final college choice." (This is a guide from Carleton, but intended to be generalizable for students who end up at other schools: https://www.carleton.edu/admissions/apply/afford/merit/) |
| Thank you! That is really helpful. I find the materials from the national merit people so confusing. |
I know, right? It's so opaque. |
Ok, ok, I admit I was wrong. I was looking at a different source for this, collegetransitions I believe |
| For the snobs out there, remember many years University of Oklahoma enrolls more NMFs than Yale or Princeton, etc. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Merit_Scholarship_Program#College_enrollment |
It reflects more on how these students doesn’t receive financial at schools to attend schools they like and less on random schools like Oklahoma buying desperate National Merit Finalists with merit money. |
Its not like they attend because they want to, but because Oklahoma makes finalists, scholars by giving them money to boast high enrollment of scholars to inflate school’s stats. |
