Why do people think it's okay to let their dog shout at people who walk by?

Bark collar

Think for a minute about what these do to what is a dog’s natural instinct. Can we give you a talk collar?
And I have electric fence collars on my dogs to keep them contained in my yard. Bark collars are cruel.

What’s with this idea that you should get to control what happens inside another person’s house so you aren’t annoyed? I really think some of these people need to move to more rural areas for the good of everyone.

NP. Maybe I do need to move to a more rural area. I'm in a townhouse, and my next-door neighbor adopted a pit mix from a rescue earlier in the pandemic. The dog barks at every passing thing, which is a lot because we're in an urban environment. Deep, loud barks all day long.

You are insane. Dogs bark to communicate. Because, in case you haven’t noticed, they can’t TALK you dumbass.

Okay, you lost me when you said you have electric fence collars lol. Those are so much worse than bark collars.

I have two big barkers. They would bark at people, squirrels, leaves, whatever. We ended up getting a spray called Pet Corrector that has worked really well to train them. It just sort of makes a noise when you spray it and they stop immediately. They now know the ramifications of barking so it's pretty much stopped and only needs occasional reinforcement.

If you try to correct for barks and growls you can get a dog who is aggressive without warning. We try to distract and treat for not barking but we can't sit by the window by our dog all day. Pulling the blinds down doesn't help because our dog can sense it. Our dog only does it for a handful of dogs he doesn't like.
Why don't you block your dog's access to the windows?

He barks at dogs walking by whether he's at the window or not. He can sense them. In some ways, he's less anxious when he can see what's out there. But I don't let him bark if I can help. I interrupt and command that he come to my side and we wait out the passersby. He's crated if I'm not home.

You could put on background noise, he's "sensing" something. I'm guessing he can hear them.

I have family who seem to think screaming "SHUT UP!" at the dog will train them to stop barking. That's also really pleasant.

Dogs are so annoying. Dog owners even more so. Train your dog or don't get one.

Bc they don’t want to inconvenience themselves to be better neighbors
