What explains the liberalism of DC residents?

- Universal Paid Leave
- New Mom UBI Pilot
- Free Public Transportation for Kids
- Highest LEED Environmental certification in the country
- Extremely high percentage of commerce and mixed used development
- Universal public testing and vaccination for a pandemic
- Highest levels of protections for residents in a pandemic including moratorium laws and vaccine passports

Meanwhile our neighbors just got stripped of a mask mandate. I love DC.

Yep. I'm the one with a second home here, and I agree. It's amazing to behold. I'm a 90 minute drive to our DC rowhome right now and might as well be in another country. Recently there was a $1 million home liisting here that sold right away, then before you knew it it was back on the market -- the buyers discovered that there was no way to get internet! Yet, the locals consistently vote against anybody supporting any government spending programs that could be life-changing for them.

And, yes, many flatly refuse to get vaccinated.

I'll take DC's liberalism any day of the week.

Why won't west Virginians get vaxxed? Do they think the virus stops at the WV border?

Lol. I don't want to pay any taxes or have much govt, but I collect SS snd use medicare. Ok.

I don't complain about taxes and think taxes should go up on people like me, as long as they also go up on businesses and the super rich.

Good question.

I've been soliciting bids for some roof work. A guy showed up the other day who could barely walk up my front steps (and there are only four of them) without getting winded. Said he just got over a month-long bout with covid that he thought was going to kill him. Had been hospitalized. Forty years old, thin, no underlying health conditions, not vaccinated. Crazy.

For those talking about crime, here's a reminder that DC voted for strict gun crime laws but those were stricken down by conservatives (Heller) and most of the criminals get their guns thanks to conservative VA next door.

Makes me wonder because it seems obvious that one thing that would really improve DC is to break the stranglehold the Democratic Party has on city government.

Reforms that gave DC residents relative autonomy over the city came after the Great Society legislation. So once the GOP took in the southern white racists as core to the party, it expended DC as a place that would align with that. If the GOP had stayed true to the party of Lincoln, then perhaps things would be pretty different.

+1 all while running a budget surplus AND having a $6B+ "rainy day" fund that other jurisdictions salivate over.

Actually, very little of DC residents actually work for the federal government or the contractors. That is mostly suburban folk.
