Why is the flavor enhancer, MSG vilified in the US while it’s popular in Japan?

When you check the ingredients , think you’re in the clear, eat the food, get the migrain and contact the company… only to find there was one ingredient from another source with MSG… it’s neither psychosomatic nor racist.

Have a family member who is a world traveler and adventurous eater. Has sadly had to give up certain foods. Maybe food allergies. But it sure as hell isn’t racism. How so many of you get from vomiting and migraines to racism is beyond comprehension.

Yes. Tomatoes, peppers and MSG. Mushroom have been OK.

Quite a lot actually, as your racist rant here proved. You have no idea what msg is, but you go on and on about how it makes you sick. It is in most foods you eat, you better never touch tomatoes, parmesan cheese, cheddar, peas, seaweed, mushrooms, etc.

In south indian food we have an ingredient, asofoetida. It smells kinda bad (though i like it) and gives an umami punch to stir fries, soups. Stews. I think it’s natural though. When i forget to add it, food is missing that yumminess of when grandma used to make it. Anyway, a new ingredient for people to obsess over.

There are some studies that have shown that MSG can cause issues when dissolved in hot liquid in large quantities and the consumer drinks them on an empty stomach. This tracks with my experience - back when I was in the throes of an eating disorder, I decided that my one meal that day was going to be going out and having a bowl of pho (and eat around the noodles), and I started having the most bizarre reaction - I thought I was going to pass out or have a heart attack. I finally asked the kitchen what was in it and they said they used MSG in the broth. I’ve never had issues any other time, and have eaten pho at that same place again, but I never eat brothy soups on an empty stomach.

You people find racism in the strangest places.

OMG! Like how they injected the chicken with msg and it died? When injected with an insane dose of it? Guess what would happen to a chicken if you inject a ton of salt into it?
You had an eating disorder, your perception of food and reactions was not normal.
I have been eating msg in one of the spices I use my whole life. Never had a problem, my kids don't have a problem, we are not Asian. It is a common flavor enhancer found is many spices.

Actually, when you have an eating disorder, you’re very well attuned to every little thing. Something happened with that soup, and I no particular preconceptions about MSG because I had eaten food with it since forever. That’s why I did the research when I got home and found what the medical professionals said about when MSG could potentially be problematic. I believe that any chemical can cause a reaction in people, and there are a ton of things where people’s reactions are different to the naturally occurring version of something than when it’s added as a processed enhancement. So I’m sure you and your kids don’t have an issue, but I also believe people who say it can trigger a migraine for them. It’s almost as if people can be different.

NP here. I definitely get heacaches from MSG (and aspartame). I avoid all MSG foods like Doritos and sauces with it added. I don't eat many mushrooms, but don't like them much so maybe that is why -- never knew they occurred naturally.

I love all Asian food, and am married to an Asian person, FWIW.

NP. Same. Aspartame gives me horrible headaches. I avoid MSG, mostly because it is usually combined with high sodium foods. I am very sensitive to sodium. My dad had a stroke when I was an infant and so I was raised on low/no sodium diet. I think that’s why I am sensitive to high sodium foods. Even low sodium soy sauce causes my fingers to swell.

What happened with that soup is that you were starving and decided to eat the most volume for no calories meal! And you then effed up your health.
