| When people use the name of God or Jesus in vain its like nails on a chalkboard to me as it should be. I think if people realized how wrong it was they would stop doing it. Why do people do it? If I had to guess, because they dont realize that it's very wrong to do it. Personally, I believe it's a sin. |
It’s not universally “wrong”. Just wrong to some people with certain beliefs. |

There is no restriction in taking the names of our Gods in vain in our religion. We are free to use these names in greetings and even for exclamations.
The way we use it for greetings would be the eqivalent of saying "Jesus, Jesus" in the morning instead of "Good morning"...so perfectly fine. The only thing I do not like is when people use it for cussing. There is no reason for JFC to exist. |
Good point. In English we have “God bless you” when somebody sneezes, and “Godspeed” when somebody goes away. I totally agree that JFC is abusive. |
| "Oh for Buddha's sake" just doen't have the same ring to it. |
| I'm not religious, but I respect my religions gods. Most Christians don't seem to care enough about their religious figures to not curse their names. |
And still not addressed. |
| The missionaries and proslytizers are extremely annoying and should mind their own business. These "God-botherers" are one of the less attractive aspects of certain religions. |
| You're obviously not Catholic, OP! |
Probably not answered because OP doesn’t want to admit that she believes HER god is the only god and everyone else is wrong. |
| Jumping Jehosephat! |
| "For Pete's sake" and "For the love of Pete" probably refers to St. Peter. |
|
Sweet mother of god.

+1. |
+1. I would guess uttering "Jesus Christ" in a moment of stress as a prayer, eventually turned into angrily exclaiming "JESUS CHRIST!" Maybe it stems from simplifying the question "Jesus, why have you forsaken me?!" When you hit your thumb with a hammer, it's simpler to exclaim "Jesus!" I'm just guessing. |
