| That's my question. You never hear, for example, "Buddha d--- it!" |
| I know for me- I'm Christian. I'm not taking in vain the name's of other people's gods. That's for them to do. |
| Other religions take their gods seriously. |
|
Uh, you know what 'God' is not exclusive to Christianity, right? For example, 'Allah' is the arabic word for 'god' - Christians who speak Arabic will use the term 'Allah' as a translation for the word 'god.'
|
| I had a friend in college who always said “great Zeus!” |
You also don't hear "Jesus damn it!" |
Because Buddha is not a god. Anyone can become a Buddha. |
DP here, but yes we know that. That’s OP’s point. Do Muslims take Allah’s name in vain? Do they say Allah damn it, or something similar? |
Yeah but you hear “Jesus Christ” or “Jesus F-ing Christ” When people are mad. |
| "Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and the wee donkey!" |
|
At the time of the Budhha, one might say "deer shit!"

| because we speak English and Jesus Christ and God were religious entities that were common when the terms came into use |
|
Because all of the missionaries forced Christianity onto my people, not a different religion.
|
Because the colonists forced English into your people. |
Pretty sure not but Christians came up with all the workarounds to avoid using God or Jesus (like my mom saying "good gravy" because "good grief" would even be bad). I wonder if using divine names in swearing just evolved more in the Christian (western) world to a greater extent. |
