Physical activity is optional at GDS US? I am deeply skeptical of this statement.

PE is a requirement for everyone (even those on GDS sports teams) for 9th and 10th (every other day during school). Its fun games, fitness, etc.

Are you the same poster from 2021? Not sure why this is being bumped as there were plenty of responses to the question back when it was posted.

The question is what are you doing to support your child’s adhd? Are they taking medication? Working with an executive function coach? If the answer is no to both, I would strongly consider a school that supports that. HS in both of these places requires that your child have these supports in place. And, before anyone comes at me for medication, you need to do your research. 60% of all students who are medicated report “normalized ranges” of symptoms. It is the single most effective intervention we have, period. That isn’t to say that we shouldn’t do other things too. Just that it is vital.

Burke has less homework than GDS and will give a smart ADHD kid plenty of intellectual stimulation while still giving the kid time to do other fun and worthwhile activities. Burke also is less stressful. There are quite a few families in DC who have experience with both.

Burke. GDS will counsel out. New principal doesn’t connect with students or show compassion. She’s a robot.

Burke. Burke. Burke.

My DC has ADHD and does well at GDS, but it requires a lot of effort. The teachers and staff do care but push for kids to learn self-advocacy so the onus is on the kid to seek help if needed. And yes, PE is only required for two years in the upper school, which frees up a period for academics or enrichment if your kid is not sporty.

Agreed on new HS principal. Extremely disliked by students. She’s never around. Kids never see her. She has spoken at perhaps one HS student assembly all year.

Quality of teaching is mostly good to great in HS. But mostly a self-advocacy fight for yourself culture. It’s sort of part of the DNA of the HS.

How about at other "non traditionals"? Field, SSFS etc
