Am I expecting too much after closing on a house?

Well, OP paid nothing. The seller pays.

And who paid tge seller??? Think very hard about this. How did the seller get the money for that 3% commission? Oh wait…

No, *You* think a little harder about this.

OP made no direct payment to the buyer agent. That payment was made by the seller. It’s not like the 3% was tacked on like a tax.

Also, it’s really weird that OP expects a gift from the *broker.* Has she even met the broker?

Many years ago We bought and sold 1 million in real estate with an agent. He gave us a mug with a picture of our new home...and the wrong street address.

The seller was contractually obligated to pay. Think very hard about this.

😂

We got nothing, but our home was $350k, so probably not worth it! I’m not fussed.

OP, that broker will send you some marketing materials or a cheery email hint to recommend her to your friends. That’s when you can tell her that you were disappointed in her failing to make that goodwill gesture as prior agents have and as most in your experience have.

My goodness who cares. You are well-off enough to buy a $3M home and you're worried about a shitty bottle of Veuve.

One of my closest friends is in real estate and casually asked me what our broker sent as a closing gift because she is looking for unique ideas to send for her own clients as closing gifts. I didn't think much about it as we just closed about 7 weeks ago but then realized nothing was given. And that kind of surprised me when she drew my attention to it. Last time we closed on a house we got a huge beautiful gourmet food basket and the time before that, a case of my husbands favorite wine.

My friend told me in all the homes she has sold, she has never not given something even a small token something as a closing gift and a thank you for a nice commission check. My husband was not crazy about this broker to begin with but now that I think about it, I am kind of disappointed. Is this the norm? If giving something is the norm, it makes me realize my husband is a great judge of character It is not that we need the gift but more the thought/gesture. Especially since she walked away with a 6 digit commission.

We bought an almost 400k house from Redfin. Got a wind chime from our Redfin agent and a framed artist rendering of our house from the broker. Both cute. We still get Xmas cards from our broker.

How old are you? 6?

Who cares. It’s a “gift” using your own money.

Thanks for the chuckle, PP!

This is news to me. Never got a gift for buying or selling a house!

Why would the broker send something? Do you even have a relationship with the broker?

Sounds like your issue is with the agent.

It’s gauche to expect a gift, though.

Has OP answered this question yet??
Why on God's green earth would a broker send you anything??
Your agent would be the one who might do so.
How does someone who lives in a $3 million dollar home not understand this?

Nice job teaching everyone the proper terminology. No one should get away with simple misunderstanding of terminology. There is a spot in the Justice League waiting for you!

Name the realtor.

I got nothing when I purchased my first house but I'm pretty sure my realtor didn't like me and I didn't like her. She kept making mistakes like telling the seller the wrong purchase price (higher than I was willing to go) and didn't want me to ask for concessions to clean up rat droppings in the attic because the seller was a little underwater on their mortgage even though I was buying the home at fair market rate. After I closed I found out the seller had begun a permit for a sewer leak and then never closed it or used it even though there was a sewer issue and my neighbor knew all about it. Realtor never recommended to me a first time home buyer to have the sewer line inspected in addition to a standard home inspection. Cost me 9K to fix. Had the nerve to call me this year to ask if I wanted to sell. I remember when my parents sold they received a Tiffany crystal vase and when they bought they received a gift certificate to an expensive restaurant.
