Kids who get new cars for their 16th birthday

Oh I would want my kid to drive versus going on a bus. Do you know about those buses?

Plus if they are working or soon after they have transportation.

OP being jealous of others is no way to go through life.

Wouldn't it be the best time to have a car with all the safety features?

LOL this how parents have justified giving a 16 year-old a brand new car for the last 40 years. Most teens are too dumb and irresponsible for a new car.

Another story: the valedictorian of my high school when I was a junior was promised a Porsche by his parents if he got a full-ride to college. Well, he got into some great colleges (Berkeley, UCLA, etc) but only got a full-ride at the local community college.

Guess what a dumb 18 year-old boy choose? A Porsche and community college. He's now a wedding videographer.

I decided to hide someone on fb when she posted ‘look! Larlo decided on a Rover for his 16th so he could match him mom!’

So gross. Yes, I could actually afford matching rovers for me and my kid. But I recognize that some people within my realm of friends and family can’t. Flaunting wealth is always tacky.

We are very fortunate and my child is not old enough to drive so I can’t predict what we will do about a car. I am happy that my child is modest and deliberately downplays her luck. She won’t discuss or post about our vacations and has said that she doesn’t have money. This is true and she recognizes her parents achievements are not her own. Very proud of her.

Kids with their own cars are at greater risk of dying in car crashes.

Teens generally are at MUCH greater risk of dying in car crashes, so should drive cars with really strong safety features (which are LESS likely to be found in old cars).

Sure but a sedan that's a two or three years old is a better idea than a brand new Porche or Mustang

We gave our kid a used civic when he got his license. You’re gross for not seeing the huge asset it is to have a kid drive himself to and from school. Gone are the late night trips after away games and early morning drop offs. He’s even carpooling so he only drives a few days a week. Why do you care so much about other people. Op you are shallow and disgusting yourself.

It's a good lesson in life.

Some kids get new cars.
Some kids get new cars when they wreck their first new car.
Some kids get used cars.
Some kids get grandmas' cars.
Some kids just get to share with you.
Some kids get nothing.

It's easy to teach gratitude for most every level here. It's how every aspect of life works.

This. It's never to early to learn life is not fair. It just isn't.

Doesn't bother me in the least to see these. To each their own. I would never do it but don't care one bit if others do.

We have 2 drivers. They both have cars. While we could have afforded to buy them both brand new ones, we didn't. I've seen teen drivers-they suck. They got used ones. And I didn't post anything on social media, but that's just how I am.

My kids know that starting at 13 or 14, they're going to have to start saving money to participate in either the purchase of a car or the taking over of one of our cars. There is no way we're giving them a car. It's not that we "can't." We just won't. We do see the value in them having a car but they won't get one for free.

My MoCo Fire and EMS husband has said he’s seen more dead young people in Honda Civics - especially 2 doors - than any other type of car. They really don’t perform well in crashes. Especially side impact crashes.

I don't believe sports cars are known for safety.

Honds Civics are also really popular. So, you might expect to see them in crashes.

My kid bought his own used truck. He fixed it up and resold it for more to upgrade to a nicer truck. I didn’t pay a dime. I also didn’t post on Facebook.

DH and I would never buy a brand new car for a new driver even though we could afford one.
