Wow, are you sure?? I am late 40s. My MD plan is 590 a month, for me - it's a gold carefirst PPO. That's without any subsidy. And it's going down to 530 next year. You should shop around. I hope that extra tens years doesn't more than double the premium cost!

It does. My DH is 15 years older than I am, and his premium was almost double mine when we were on the ACA.

NP here. How does one search for a private plan not on the exchange?

We pay about $1300/month for CareFirst Blue Choice w/$6k family deductible for 2 adults (40's) and 2 kids, unsubsidized. I'm mostly okay with the coverage but find the deductible outrageous given the size of the premium we pay. We thankfully have never reached the deductible so we pay a lot of premium for very little benefit.

$5300/month for 4 of us. Ppo

Why??!!

Why what?

This is crazy! 60k a year in health insurance premiums?? Wow. I never realized they could get that high.

Crap, I would rather work at home depot when i am "retired" just to get health insurance..

Well, there is a single - one - option in all of VA for a ppo. Well, there are two options: a gold and silver ppo. We did gold for years and it wasn’t worth the extra amount so this is the “lower” silver amount. I didn’t retire young to scrimp on health insurance but it is outrageous.

I’m the poster who said our ‘21 monthly ins premium was $5300/month for a ppo. To recap: it is the only ppo option available in VA. Our premium went down for the first time in years in ‘22 to $4900 and we just received a notice that our ‘23 coverage will be $3900. We are thrilled.

VA doesn't have great private insurance choices. MD does. Not sure about DC. And the prices in MD seem lower than VA.

They will get you one way or the other. Taxes may be lower in VA, but medical costs are lower in MD, and there are more medical facilities in MD.

You do not want a plan that excludes pre-existing conditions as you get older.

The plans you are looking for that are cheaper will exclude pre-existing conditions.

I talked to someone about buying a plan off the exchange. I asked what would happen if I got cancer (two people in my family had breast cancer). The line I got was that they will only cover $250K per year per person (which is easy to hit when you have cancer treatments), and after your coverage expires, they can kick you off. I asked then what would I do? The person said, "You'd have to buy a plan on the exchange".

So, basically, I'm being told to screw the exchange and let other people pay into it, but go buy it if you get unlucky and get cancer.

What would happen if ACA wasn't available? I'd be screwed and have to file for medical bankruptcy. So, I stayed on the exchange. Not gonna lie. It's not the best coverage. I probably have similar coverage to yours, and the price tag. But, I am not willing to go on a plan that will limit what they cover, and I don't want ACA to fail.

If you are in MD, you are luckier than most. MD prices are cheaper than most of the country.

I've had private insurance for many years, including pre ACA out west.
