Throw UVA into that mix, this weekend (parents weekend) I was surrounded by obnoxious NY, NJ and Philly parents...they were everywhere, completely nauseating.

Attended and loved UW-Madison!!

A student at UW - or any big ten/ state school- must have the confidence to navigate a big system and find their own way. For some, it’s too big a school and task. For me it was fabulous!! Good luck to your kid!

I’ll add, I was an out of state student (Midwest). Upon graduating, I moved first to Chicago, then NYC and raised my family in DC. I found alumni all along the way.

I was kinda straight edge (didn’t use substances) and had a blast!

How is their journalism program?

I'm from Long Island and the east coasters of NY, NJ and Philly are the worst. Add Indiana to that as well.

I don’t know too much about it, but I think it is pretty well regarded. I knew some journalism majors when I was there and they all seemed pleased with it and they went on to successful careers.

Grew up in Wi and loved my time in Madison. Attended law school there, too. Big Law in Dc for past 30 years.

Wisconsin is the absolute best. Alums look out for each other and have such pride in being a Badger.

I was out of state and friends with people from all over the country. Many of us ended up in Chicago, NYC, and LA.

Journalism pretty solid.

The Onion was started in Madison!

Yeah, UVA is another de facto state school for people from those states. And no, Rutgers and Penn State don’t count.

It didn't "sort of" happen.

The religious and gender discrimination that lasted into the 1970's pushed kids from the east coast to schools with more progressive policies.

I was thinking more along the lines that the state schools in those places suck and that these kids were rejected from Ivies and so on. Madison was/is progressive. No idea about Michigan.

Very strong. They have a wide variety of print and on-camera talent at the national and local level. They were at the forefront of digital media as part of the journalism school.

This is correct. East coast schools had Jewish quotas, Wisconsin/Michigan did not.

Oh, of course this old DCUM favorite trope has to come up. So predictable. There are people from every state and all over the world at Wisconsin. There are people from every kind of background there is.

Except black people. And it’s ok to acknowledge that. Some applicants may want to know.

Most African-Americans in state prefer to attend UW-Milwaukee.

It isn't for lack of trying.

Importantly, it’s the one state U (where they actually have a prayer) other than Michigan that will not embarrass their liberal mom and dad when they tell their bethesda neighbors and coworkers that Ian/Sophie is at a state school. Most such schools are either too Southern and therefore embarrassing, [Georgia, Florida, Texas] or too “eh” and therefore not prestigious enough for law firm colleagues (Illinois?? Ohio State ….er, are you an alum, Dave? Penn State? Joe Paterno! Minnesota? Didn’t they want to look at WISCONSIN? oh you know Lisa’s kid went to Wisconsin and apparently loved it ….). It’s not equally highly ranked UMD.

UW hits the sweet spot for this liberal demographic. You can get in, unlike UNC, UCLA, UT. Also, lakes!

PP. may I suggest you get some help for the major self-esteem issues that you seem to be dragging around?
