Are big family portraits on the wall tacky?

Whoa. I always thought it was no family pictures on the *walls* in public living spaces but small framed photos (I.e., on a mantel or end table) were acceptable.

Are we talking a large family PHOTOGRAPH or a large family PAINTING?

I think photos are totally normal and that houses without photos seem very cold, but I would side eye a painting and think something like, 'huh look at that'. But nothing too negative. More like, 'they must have a lot of money'.
