| Fed family. So no. |
| ^ NP. Even if it does not cause it, it may trigger it in someone with a disposition. Unbelievable that you wouldn’t try and minimize that risk for your kids if there is any genetic predisposition in your family. My sibling had schizophrenia and it is a horrible thing, and it was triggered after regular pot use (in a family with no know genetic link before this). I tell my kids all the time that avoiding pot and other drugs is imperative due to family history. |

Mine have no interest, but no, we don't allow or encourage illegal behavior in our children. If they did it anyway, there would be consequences, just as there would for any other illegal behavior, and we would get them help if they needed it to stop (i.e., counseling to help resist peer pressure).
I have plenty of friends who feel differently. |
Most teens who use it, do use it every day. |
Which might have been avoided if one did not use pot. |
| A good college friend of mine not in the DC area allowed her DS to smoke & he recently flipped from super-achieving academics (many APs/2 community college classes as a junior) to school resistance - wanting to drop out of school, running away. My friend believes he has marijuana-induced psychosis. Potency of pot now + documented risks to developing brains gives me great pause. |
And like smoking, alcohol, gambling, etc., it is addictive to many people. Want your teen to play “addiction roulette” with psycho-active substances?? Great! Condone their weed use. It does not seem like good parenting to me, but it’s your kid not mine. And you are so cool!

Do the moment it’s legal you’re fine with it! Way to go pp. |
| What consequences would you have if your teen smoked weed? I just found out my teen is smoking it after we went down this road a few months ago. I am thinking about restricting his access to his bank account and his phone. Plus not allowing him to go to friend’s houses or out with friends. What else? |

In Montogomery County they will still ticket anyone under 21 with possession of marijuana. It’s still a misdemeanor and will cost $500-1000 to fight the ticket and have it expunged.
If you are going to look the other way I suggest charging your teen the attorney fees now. They will get caught at some point. I know of four individual cases received in the past 12 months (four different teens all in MoCo, in possession at three different times). |
Thanks for the info but where did you get that I planned on looking the other way? I asked for opinions about consequences. |
I didn't say that. |
It wasn’t necessarily to you specifically, just a note of warning to others. Many parents and most teens think it’s no big deal. Or that law enforcement now look the other way. In our jurisdiction they do not. |
I'd make an exception for terminal cancer. Is the teenager on chemotherapy and dealing with awful nausea? |
I was one of the kids that came back stoned from lunch. Guess what? Most of us turned out fine. And lots of kids who didn’t smoke weed at lunch didn’t turn out fine. You never know. I grew up in a blue collar town and you’d be surprised how common it was to smoke and drink with parents when we were teenagers. I smoked with my parents but would never smoke with my child. But if I had to choose, I’d want my child to smoke instead of drinking alcohol. |
