Wow. I really thought that they would get another operator to come in and take it over.

Apparently they will. From the Post education reporter over Twitter:

CAPCS can operate through end of school year. Next year buildings will have new operators. Students will have option to stay. More to come...

Oh wow, but I'm glad to hear this. Wonder what they will change the school names to.

Thank god. These children deserve to continue in their school, regardless of the misdeeds of the grown ups in charge. Don't punish the kids.

Dear CAPCS Parents and Guardians,

This morning, the District of Columbia Public Charter School Board (PCSB), an independent board, voted to revoke the charter for Community Academy Public Charter School (CAPCS). While the vote will undoubtedly cause angst for the 1,600 CAPCS students and their families, the District of Columbia is ready to make sure that the needs of the students are met for the 2015-16 school year.

At the request of Mayor Bowser, I developed a plan in collaboration with Friendship Public Charter Schools, DC Bilingual Public Charter School, and the Chancellor of DC Public Schools to provide as much continuity as possible for CAPCS students and families.

Armstrong Campus (1400 First Street, N.W.): Friendship Public Charter School will assume operations beginning next school year (2015-16) for all 523 students.

Nicholson Campus/Online Academy (1351 Nicholson Street, N.W.): Friendship Public Charter School will assume operations beginning next school year (2015-16) for all 123 students.

Burdick Campus (1300 Allison Street, N.W.): DC Public Schools will assume operations beginning next school year (2015-16) for all 590 students.

Keene Campus (33 Riggs Road, N.E.): DC Bilingual Public Charter School will relocate to this site with its 350 students and add up to 90 students from Keene. Students at Keene may also attend Friendship PCS with a guaranteed seat.

In addition, you may apply to the My School DC lottery by March 2 for any other public charter school or out-of-boundary DCPS school. Please note that there will be enrollment fairs for Friendship, DC Bilingual, and DCPS (please check DCPS’ and PCSB’s website on Monday). DC Bilingual will hold open houses on February 21st and 28th from 12:00pm-2:00pm at 1420 Columbia Road, NW. School enrollment specialists also will be made available for one-on-one meetings with you to help determine the best school for your child. You may reach them at 202-328-2660.
In closing, I understand the anxiety that this situation may be causing and my staff and I will work diligently in the coming days and weeks to support your family during this transition. Your child’s education remains my number one priority.

Sincerely,
Jennie Niles
Deputy Mayor for Education

Woah, DC bilingual. That one seems a shocker. Is the one called Keene the same as Amos 2?

Yes - DC Bilingual is moving to Amos 2.

That gets DC Bilingual in the location they were hoping for (isn't Amos 2 just a block or two from Mamie Lee?). This might be good news for those Brookland families who are looking for charter school options that make logistic sense.

Good to see the charter board take strong steps on accountability! Now hopefully they will scrutinize applications better and put any needed ethics rules in place so this situation can be prevented.

Interesting. So it's turning back into a DCPS school?

Very interesting and creative problem solving here. Glad to see such collaboration between charter and DCPS sectors. Have we ever seen DCPS take over a Charter? I know the opposite has occurred of course. And relocating DC Bilingual to co-house is also a potentially positive and interesting maneuver to bring together schools with different population bases. Fascinating, but it hope it will provide the continuity the CAPCS kids need and deserve.

How's Friendship on residency verification? It sounds like the Bloomingdale location has a "Maryland" problem.

Friendship Public Charter School - is it any good? What's it's story?

Yes, 33 Riggs Rd NE is separated from Mamie Lee only by a small field and a line of trees, literally down the block.
